What can Squash learn from Padel and Pickleball? The rise of padel and pickleball is indeed remarkable. With racquet sports already popular in Southeast Asia—such as badminton, table tennis, and tennis—how can squash emerge as quickly in such a competitive sports landscape? The answer may lie in the involvement of entrepreneurs and investments in the sport's infrastructure. By making squash more inclusive and accessible for players at all levels, it can attract a broader audience and grow rapidly. 🏅 For one, investments in neighbourhood squash courts or clubs can improve the sport’s accessibility.  🏅 Secondly, increasing the availability of squash equipment services, whether brick or mortar, or online, can further fuel the appetite for the sport.  🏅 Thirdly, development of apps to match squash players to matches can make the sport more accessible. After investing in infrastructure, the next important step is marketing. A key focus area could be strategic sponsorships or partnerships with sports legends. Additionally, exploring creative marketing initiatives aimed at Gen Z—similar to the successful strategies used by padel and pickleball—could provide a significant boost for squash. This might involve running a social media campaign with influencers or collaborating with trendy, youth-oriented brands to make squash more prominent and relevant in Southeast Asia. If padel and pickleball are any indication, a dedicated effort to develop squash could yield substantial returns on investment. This is my other half, Will Skewes at Badminton Horse Trials, standing under the score board looking relaxed and happy. And with good reason. It's the main Saturday of the most prestigious event in the eventing calendar across the globe. And I think that realisation has just hit that he's successfully pulled off connectivity for the event. A mixture of relief and euphoria is sinking in. After 4 weeks of being on site - running cables across the acres of Badminton Estate (where The Gentleman was filmed), splicing fibres, installing hundreds of access points, configuring switches, managing a team of people, quality checking everything, testing, and a lot more that I don't even try to understand, he's finally reaping the rewards of his work. At this point everything is running to perfection: - Thousands of trader devices are connected to his network, allowing smooth payment processing. From Mars to Joules, Costa to The Pig & Whistle....they all rely on Wireless Solutions - The production team are online. Should Padel Coaches in the UK play competitions? There are many people getting qualified in the UK as Padel Coaches or Instructors through various providers. In my experience of delivering Padel coaching qualifications, I would say under 10% of attendees are competing at an appropriate level (outside of their clubs social events or fixed 4s). As we grow Padel in the UK, my opinion is that those interested in becoming a Padel Coach must play appropriate regional / national competitions to improve their own Padel and therefore knowledge of the game. Coaches can learn something from every event they play. There is no such thing as perfect Padel and a lot of times winning ugly is required! Only by playing competitions can Coaches really get under the skin of the game and be able to provide the best insight to their players. Squash 57 is the Padel of Squash Pickle Ball in the USA, and Padel globally have exploded and they continue to grow. Why? Because they are players games. Easy to grasp, inclusive and not difficult to bring various levels together for a great fun game. They are doubles mainly, which means they are very sociable too. Basically Padel is beach bats with rules and despite the bats costing a fortune (which is completely unnecessary) it is a great way to be active and have fun at the same time. Are they a threat to tennis and squash? Absolutely not. In fact they are bringing in more people to potentially play squash and tennis. They have reignited dormant squash players and tennis players to get back hitting a ball. The fact that people are hitting a ball with a racket or bat should be celebrated. Nothing will replace Wimbledon or the British Open Squash in terms of drama and the singles games that have captivated audiences for years. This brings me to my headline point. Squash 57 (also called UK Racketball) is the Padel and Pickle Ball of Squash. It is a game that can be played all - the ball bounces even in winter, the levels as shown by former UK no 1 Simon Parke can be insane. You get a proper sweat and much more of a workout than Padel by far and yet your body does not hurt after. I am hooked on both Padel and Squash 57 and they have got me very excited that more people can join in for the fun. I am not worried about the old fashioned die hard squash players who cannot see that Squash 57 is going to get squash back on the map as a fun game and fill more courts, I am more excited about new players who come for a proper workout when they are not playing padel or pickleball. The moral of the story is that many of the traditional games are not easy for everyday folks to master. The new breed of racket sports has changed that. I look forward to seeing people try Squash 57. Note: Squash 57 uses a bouncier bigger ball than squash and a smaller racket, but it is not the same as US racketball which uses a super bouncy uncontrollable ball. The rules are almost identical to squash and the principals the same. Try it.

Ai question of the day. The reason I am posting this question is because I went to a professional pickleball tournament yesterday. (PPA Pickleball) They were all very good athletes and these athletes brought the game to a whole new level. What is the history of Pickleball and where did it start? 🎾🤔 Pickleball is a relatively new sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three fathers: Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. The story goes that they created the game as a way to entertain their children during the summer. The original setup involved a badminton court with a net, but they used ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball instead of traditional badminton equipment. The name "pickleball" is often attributed to the Pritchard family's dog, Pickles, who would chase the ball and run off with it during games. However, there are alternative theories about the name's origin, including that it was named after the term "pickle boat," referring to a crew in a rowing competition made up of leftover members from other boats. The popularity of pickleball grew rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in the Pacific Northwest and then across the United States. In 1984, the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was formed to promote the sport and establish standardized rules. Since then, pickleball has continued to gain popularity due to its accessibility, as it can be played by people of all ages and skill levels. Today, pickleball is played both recreationally and competitively, with a growing number of players and tournaments around the world. Major events include national championships and professional leagues, further contributing to the sport's rise in recognition and participation. The Rise and Rise of English Beach Volleyball At Volleyball England, we are fortunate to be a National Governing Body overseeing three formats of the sport: Indoor, Beach, and Sitting Volleyball—all of which are Olympic/Paralympic disciplines. Our Game Plan strategy (2020–2030) outlines clear ambitions for each format of the sport. At the four-year mark, however, it’s evident that Beach Volleyball—if harnessed correctly—has the potential to be the vehicle that drives the whole sport forward in the immediate term. As with any type of building, establishing firm foundations beneath the surface provides stability for growth. With this principle in mind, our work at Volleyball England over the past two years has focused on embedding solid foundations through People, Places, and Pathways. From a Beach Volleyball perspective specifically, this has included: People - We have improved relationships at the international level with FIVB, CEV, and NEVZA, and established new working groups within the Home Nations and British Volleyball Federation. Additionally, we have recruited a high-level Beach Performance Director and Beach Development Manager to act as figureheads, supporting other prominent paid and volunteer roles. Places - Where something happens is often just as important as what happens or how it happens. We have identified eight Beach Volleyball Development Centres around the country and in partnership with Birmingham City University and Sport England, we are building an indoor beach facility that will host a High-Performance Beach Programme. Pathways - Ensuring we have robust and flowing pipelines of players, coaches, and officials at all levels is critical to the sport’s growth. Equally important is supporting everyone to maximise their involvement and potential. With these conditions in place, we have added the next layer of progression by hosting and delivering two international beach events. In June, in partnership with Skyball Beach Volleyball Club, Bridlington South Beach hosted the NEVZA Youth Beach Championships. Whilst in September, alongside SideOut Beach Volleyball Club, we hosted Queen & King of the Court in Canary Wharf, the first senior international Beach event in London since the 2012 Olympics. As we move into 2025, we eagerly anticipate the official opening of the new indoor beach facility and the enrolment of our first cohort of student-athletes onto the High-Performance Programme. Additionally, we will soon announce an exciting lineup of events for the 2025 Beach season. To finish where I started, we are fortunate to oversee multiple formats of Volleyball at Volleyball England. Like any team, understanding the unique roles each format plays in the pursuit of collective success ensures everyone—and in our case, the entire sport of Volleyball—continues to win.
