✨WILD TOMORROW'S 2024 HIGHLIGHTS - 🌱 1132 INDIGENOUS TREES PLANTED 🌱 1132 trees were planted this year as part of our ongoing Sand Forest Restoration Project, breathing new life into this unique and critically endangered ecosystem. These aren’t just any trees – they’re indigenous, often endemic, and sometimes endangered species that are vital for restoring biodiversity. Our Reserve Manager Kevin, the Green Mambas, and visiting volunteers have been hard at work to ensure every sapling is carefully planted and nurtured. 🌿 But we’re not stopping here! In 2024, we aim to plant even more trees to expand our impact further. By restoring these forests, we’re not only helping wildlife but also combating climate change and protecting the land for future generations. Every tree planted is a step toward a healthier planet. 🌿🌍 Learn more about this initiative and join the effort by donating here: https://lnkd.in/e8h4vw9n #TreePlanting #Biodiversity #ConservationEfforts #SustainableLiving #ClimateAction #ForestRestoration #NatureLovers #HabitatRestoration #HabitatProtection #WildlifeConservation #Trees #WildTomorrow

Much of our work at Oceans Initiative involves identifying ways to prevent extinction of our iconic southern resident killer whales (and other species) in the face of climate change and other human stressors. We are so grateful for a generous grant from the Ruth Foundation (a GARY E. MILGARD FAMILY foundation) to support our efforts to understand how noise, contaminants, and lack of salmon are hindering SRKW recovery. Most importantly, we're trying to assess how much harm and habitat degradation the population has the natural resilience to withstand, and how we can improve it. How much industrialization (ship traffic, pipelines, fishing, ferries -- all of it, all of us) of the Salish Sea can the orcas tolerate? How can we coexist with whales in these urban waters? With this new knowledge, we can slow the decline, stabilize the population, and finally get it recovering again. This project is part of our long-term, SRKW conservation program that is supported by philanthropists, foundations, agencies, tribes, and other NGOs. This grant will complement Rob's Salish Sea Institute fellowship, and our partnered science with The SeaDoc Society, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, NOAA Fisheries, and many others. The ocean's health is more crucial than we often realize. A recent article I came across highlights the ongoing challenges our marine ecosystems face, including pollution and climate change. It’s a reminder that the ocean is not just a vast expanse of water; it's a vital source of life for our planet. Here are a few thoughts that struck me: - Interconnectedness of Ecosystems: The article emphasizes how marine ecosystems are interconnected and how damage to one part can have a ripple effect. This challenges us to think about how our actions, no matter how small, can impact marine life and the environment. - The Role of Technology: It’s fascinating to read about how technology is being leveraged to monitor ocean health. Innovations in data collection and analysis are helping researchers understand marine ecosystems better, paving the way for informed conservation strategies. - Community Involvement: Another compelling point made is the power of local communities in conservation efforts. Grassroots movements illustrate that people can make a difference and promote sustainable practices to protect their local marine environments. - A Call to Action: We often feel small in the grand scheme of things, but every action counts. Supporting organizations devoted to marine conservation not only aids their missions but also raises awareness within our communities. We can advocate for cleaner coastlines and healthier marine habitats. Let’s take a moment to reflect on our relationship with the ocean. What can we do today to ensure its health for generations to come? More than just a resource, the ocean is a key player in our survival. https://lnkd.in/gRUYp5GJ

To further the impact of our sustainable strategies, we’ve partnered with three charities that support underfunded areas, including protecting biodiversity. Climate change is the primary driver of biodiversity loss and biodiversity is part of the solution to climate breakdown. Both are interlinked. To help solve for this, we’re partnering with Fauna & Flora, who focus on protecting populations of important species, while ensuring communities can benefit from diversified income streams and a better relationship with wildlife. Our initial chosen project will focus on restoration of the remaining chimpanzee corridors in Uganda. About 1,235 acres along the Mzinene River in South Africa was set to become a pineapple farm. Know what that means? Clearing, burning, and losing. Forests, grasslands, local communities, and the wildlife that depended on them—gone. Until a small group of committed individuals, miles away in New York, answered the call for help. In our first Restor community story of the year, we spoke with Wendy Hapgood about how Wild Tomorrow was born and why. In her words: “Everything within an ecosystem is connected in marvelously complex ways. And they all need a safe place to call home.” We love how Wild Tomorrow embodies what Restor is: contributing to reversing biodiversity loss, empowering local communities, learning from one another, creating networks and collaborating, and using science to underpin their work. 🐅 Read the beautiful restoration story of hope: 🐒 https://lnkd.in/dYRmSsM4 📷 Chantelle Melzer #ThisisRestor #EcosystemRestoration #ClimateAction #CommunityStories
