The rise of AI
During 2023 we have assisted to the risen of AI technology in the industry and particularly withing the packaging sector. Application possibilities are endless, even though it will become essential for problem-solving and decision making. Within packaging sector, some companies have mature AI strategies. In the coming years, AI as a service (AIaaS), will enable the democratization of AI technologies.
On the packaging sector there is a slow adoption compare to other sectors. Industry 4.0 and data collection will provide significant opportunities.
Machine learning being the most applied on the packaging sector, can help companies on predictive maintenance and enhance cybersecurity.
Reusability
Reuse and refill are at the heart of the biggest initiative on packaging waste like the European PPWR. We should be able to see during 2024 good steps moving forward towards viable reuse schemes. We have seen already major brands rolling out pilots, like Coca-Cola or Pepsico.

Collaboration is expected among all stakeholders of the value chain to have proper regulations, clear definitions on reuse models and desire to accelerate on businesses and delivery models.
Fibre-based packaging
Several initiatives appeared during the last year like the paper bottle prototype from Paboco, where evidence to more recyclable barrier coating was evident or Cellucomp with a fibre-based bottle with a plant-based coating "first all-fibre bottle solution".
Research and development to create a more efficient life cycle for fibre-based packaging will continue to be a trend during 2024.
