Not valued at work! Anita changed her job. She got a huge salary hike and also a promotion but started feeling unvalued and unappreciated at work after a few months. This was mainly because her boss/manager was unsupportive. He was only thinking about himself and was not concerned about the team. Besides that, he was also following unethical practices. I got a 300% salary increase in my first-ever appraisal in 2006. My salary was INR 10k per month (US$125). I was super happy. But the happiness was short-lived. I found out that my colleague had negotiated better and got a 350% increase. My happiness turned into sadness. I bought my first car in 2007 and was very happy. Soon, my good friend bought a fancier car. Again, my happiness turned into sadness. Every time I compared my achievements with others, my happiness turned into sadness. Comparison is the thief of joy. As I grew older, I realized that comparison is the root cause of all sadness. I now root for the success of the people I know. I praise others' victories and celebrate with them. Not because I may need their support one day, but because it feels good to celebrate something. It is possible to go through life without ever accepting any responsibility, but such freedom from the cares of the world comes at an enormous financial cost. If you make it a practice to go out the back door when responsibility walks through the front, you will also miss out on the opportunities that always accompany responsibility. In almost any vocation, profession, or calling, your remuneration is directly proportional to the responsibility that accompanies your position. Make it a practice to volunteer for more responsibility or simply to assume it. There are times when you must get on with the task at hand without ever being formally told you’re in charge of it.
