What is your channel strategy? Every time I ask this question to the Head of sales or business head, I get a standard response: we will add more distributors or dealers. While channel expansion is critical to expand reach and coverage, it is not enough. Here are a few important elements that need to be considered: White spaces: Identify unrepresented geographies. Check your direct or indirect presence in towns with 10,000+ population (population thresholds may vary by industry). Width and depth of distribution: Assess the percentage of your business coming through wholesale channels. If it exceeds 60%, it's time to rethink your distribution strategy. Dependence on a limited number of channel partners or products is risky. Range Selling: Wholesale partners often focus on high-demand items. Encourage range selling by evaluating how many dealers purchase multiple products monthly. Discount Budget: Monitor increasing discount budgets. If the gap between discounts for your smallest and largest dealers exceeds 2%, it can harm smaller dealers and create channel disparities. Channel Profile: Define your ideal channel partner profile. Avoid appointing easily accessible but ineffective dealers. Focus on efficiency and effectiveness. Cross-Territory Sales: Disparity in discounts leads to cross-territory sales issues. How comfortable are you, on a scale of 1 to 10, when a prospect tells you “Let me think it over?” If you answered anything other than a 1, there could be a problem. You may want to consider implementing the classic OOH Sales Mastery selling rule: “A decision not to make a decision is a decision.”

Spent last week with our Loverboy Inc. NJ/PA Market Manager amy godonis doing a Market Blitz in NJ with Ritchie & Page Distributing Co. This market work was capped with a few Meet & Greets with Kyle Cooke at Wine Outlet and some key on-premise accounts. All of our work was enhanced by Alex Rumman's and Dylan Marino's social media and POS aimed specifically to reflect all our efforts. From a supplier's viewpoint, Market Work is pinnacle to gaining and keeping the front-of-mind space from our distributor management and sales personnel. We need to make our distributors an extension of us and show that we are a true partner to our distributors. - Brands with engaged wholesalers see up to a 20% increase in sales. - 80% of wholesalers are more likely to promote a brand that provides marketing materials and sales support. - Training and educating wholesaler reps can lead to a 25% increase in product knowledge and a 15% increase in sales performance. A valuable lesson learned from a former colleague in the field sales sector has stayed with me throughout the years. The statement, "They can't sell it to the whole world, can they?" resonates deeply, highlighting the significance of strategic groundwork over extravagant marketing budgets. In a competitive landscape where our rival heavily invested in marketing initiatives, neglecting essential groundwork, our approach differed significantly. Focusing on human interaction and relationship-building, we leveraged our strengths in personal contact. Ultimately, our emphasis on groundwork and personal connections enabled us to secure a significant portion of the market share without substantial marketing expenditures.
