Here are a few more REAL pieces of advice from a professional stylist that you won't learn in school: 1. You don't need to network with other stylists, unless you're looking for mentorship. There are a million other stylists in major cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Miami that are fighting for the same clients, gigs, and projects. If you've ever heard of "undercutting" it is very real. Stay in your own lane and nurture the relationships you've already established. 2. You'll go a lot further with a team. Once you've established a consistent clientele base, bring on aspiring stylists that you can trust and align with your portfolio or aesthetic and make your way to the top together. 3. All money isn't good money. You don't have to take every gig that comes your way if you don't align with the creative direction or client. Also, you shouldn't take on work that doesn't pay properly, what happens is you work for less than what your skills are worth, and it lowers the industry standard of what a stylist should actually be paid. 4. "Can I be really honest with you?" A potential client said to me on a consult. "Absolutely!" I said, somewhat bracing myself and very intrigued on what she clearly felt so strongly to say. "I've worked with stylists in the past and they never *got* me. They were good at what they did but they basically just put their style on me versus helping me find my own." oof. Unfortunately, I've heard this a lot before... I replied: "I'm sorry that's happened to you, especially more than once. Unfortunately this is pretty common because people usually hire the stylist they do because they resonate with that stylist's style. And usually the stylists are great within their range of what they believe looks good..." I continued... "What I believe my unique value proposition is, is that I am also a brand consultant who specializes in brand identity. My gift is the ability to understand who someone is and translate that aesthetically. It's just how my brain is wired... images and looks pop into my head, I can't explain it. You will resonate with my style and my vibe in some way, which is why we're even on this call, but it's about finding your unique style that actually makes you feel like you and ensuring every touch point, from your wardrobe to your website, is an authentic and accurate representation of who you are." As soon as I said "makes you feel like you" she goes "YES, that is what I want, let's do it." Feeling like yourself is what creates confidence and magnetism in your brand! People want to be in and around that energy. You want to know how to grow your brand? At the end of May, we had our employer branding photo shoot at #Starlab. Why are we actually doing this? We could simply use pictures from the internet instead of taking photos of our employees. We want to show the following with our own pictures: ✅ Authenticity: Our pictures show real people and real moments. This is how we build trust and (hopefully) ensure that we are reliable. ✅ Insight into the corporate culture: It is important to us to give potential new colleagues an insight into our working atmosphere and to share our values. ✅ Identification and team spirit: Our employees see themselves in the pictures and feel appreciated as part of the community. Our employees who want to take part in the shoot do so - no matter which department they come from Once again, it has been shown how much fun we had across departments. The pictures are real and show exactly what we are and what we live: A community.
