📚 Only 4% of the poorest children have books at home, as revealed in the recent Global Report on Early Childhood Care and Education by UNESCO 2024. This startling statistic has inspired Tanzania Early Childhood Education and Care (TECEC) and Book Dash to unite in our mission to ensure that 'Every child should own a hundred books by the age of five,' regardless of their economic status. Join us in promoting early childhood literacy and access to books for all. LITERACY WORKSHOP 2 The second literacy workshop began with a review of the lessons learnt in the previous workshop. The feedback confirmed that the participants enjoyed the first session and learnt a few things. The teachers highlighted the things that they had started doing differently as a result of the first session we had. After listening to the modifications which were already being made in their classrooms, we delved deeper into phonics. We learnt the identification and pronunciation of the consonant sounds (voiced and voiceless) and the vowels (monophthongs and diphthongs). Examples were also given for each of the sounds. It was purely a practical session as we identified letter sounds and pronounced them. We ended the session by evaluating the lessons learnt. Participants also stated the things they would be doing differently going forward. The session was fun and interactive. We made substantial progress. For support and donations, kindly use the details before. Imagine a world where every child, regardless of their background, receives a fair start to life—a world where education isn't just a privilege but a fundamental right. In South Africa, this vision faces a critical challenge. According to the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Education Research Report, only 55% of teachers can perform at Grade 4 level, highlighting a crisis in the education system. But we refuse to accept this status quo. At the Indaba Institute, we're pioneering change through our Community Rooted Education (CoRE) Programme—a seven-month course designed to empower women directly in their own communities. Why women? Because they are the backbone of our society, and investing in their education means investing in the future. I look forward to bringing you more life changing community moments as we scale. #IndabaInstitute #ECD #EmpoweringWomen
What an honour! To launch our transformative Community-Rooted Education (CoRE) in yet another community: Paarl, in the Drakenstein Municipality, Paarl, Western Cape! In the next 10 months, up to 35 x courageous women Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers will work through our CoRE Programme, with our Indaba Institute trainers, who we call our "CoRE Facilitators". To be enabled, and empowered, to develop their skills and insights ... as they nurture our youngest children of tomorrow. We hope you will follow our journey, together! Why do we do Zartnir? The idea and vision of the program are very exciting, but let's understand why we decided to do Zartnir. It is proven that people with less financial capital are less likely to get access to high-quality education. Persistence of the current economic climate might lead to further losses in Armenia’s human capital: 35% of Armenia’s school students in late primary school are unable to read and understand a short, age-appropriate text by age 10 [World Bank] But the good news is, that everything is not so hopeless. Multiple research studies have found that there is an effective and affordable tool to reduce inequality in education and improve access to it––books & reading. By creating reading clubs and purchasing great books in the Armenian language Zartnir gives hope for a better future for Armenian kids. The feedback we receive is the confirmation of the above-mentioned fact: Students’ feedback: 83% of our students mention Zartnir’s impact on academic progress, 97% of them are absolutely happy to be in Zartnir, Teachers’ feedback: 54% of our teachers report the academic progress of students who participate in Zartnir, 69% of them respond that students have a positive change in their basic skills. Read in our next post how we choose the teachers, who are going to conduct the reading clubs. Teachers remain essential stakeholders in tackling literacy challenges in any community. As important as they are to developing literacy skills in learners, some of them are not aware of the current trends in literacy let alone practical ways of teaching it. Understanding this, we incorporated Teachers' Training into our project. And we are pleased to announce the commencement of this phase in our project execution. The first session of our Teachers' Training began this week, and we had teachers from 4 public primary schools in Obafemi Owode Local Government in attendance. We began the training by watching a video that emphasised the roles of teachers in building wholesome learners. Then, we delved deeper into discussing 'Literacy in the 21st Century'. We further examined literacy challenges especially as it concerns children in underserved communities. Before the end of the workshop, we examined the roles of teachers in developing learners' literacy. Practical ways of improving literacy rates in our schools were highlighted as well. It was truly a remarkable day at St. Peter's Anglican Primary School, Obafe. We had a great time teaching and learning from fellow teachers in underserved communities. At the end of this (training) phase, we hope to provide the teachers with teaching resources. We need your support in cash and kind. Kindly reach out or send your donations to the details below. Account name: Grassroot Literacy Project Account number: 6473134131 Bank: Moniepoint Or https://lnkd.in/d4gx2sdf PS: We will continue the training with practical sessions next week. BUILD A CLASSROOM Project by Chakraviu Nepal Classroom Element- Reading Nook As per UNICEF Nepal’s 2023 factsheet, the largest learning gap is associated with household wealth: the share of children from the richest quintile with foundational reading skills is 24 percentage points higher than the share of children from the poorest wealth quintile. This gap is even wider in foundational numeracy skills, where the percentage of children from the richest quintile who have foundational numeracy skills is 68 compared to 27 percent of children from the poorest wealth quintile. We aim to close this gap through our classrooms. Our Reading Nooks are essential in fostering a love for reading, improving literacy skills, and providing a quiet, welcoming environment that encourages curiosity and lifelong learning. #buildaclassroom #chakraviunepal #nepalinonprofit

If one of your goals this year is to make an impact, then, I want to invite you to send a child to school this year through Talent Mine Academy. At Talent Mine Academy, we provide children in low-income communities with access 12 years of fully-funded high quality education. Using Problem Based Learning lesson delivery model, we are raising these children as leaders who can solve the pressing problems that their communities face. Learning is interactive and practical as our kids apply the academic concepts they learn in class to solve the problems in their communities. Last term, our Primary Four class learned about Plants in Science and its ability to solve the hunger problem. So they set up a school garden and planted Maize and Beans with the aim of doing a food drive to solve the hunger & poverty problem in the community. Our students have carried out 5 community projects so far, tackling problems ranging from educational inequity to climate change to reckless driving to drug abuse to poverty and hunger. More than anything, the world needs leaders in the grassroots who can drive systemic change from the grassroots, and our kids are not too small to create great change from their communities. At Talent Mine, we have designed and we run a curriculum and lesson delivery model that suits the developmental needs of Africa. This helps us raise our kids as young leaders who apply what they learn to change where they live - their communities. So when you send a child to school, you are not just transforming their lives, you are also transforming the grassroots and Africa at large. If you would like to take a chance on a child and on Africa, sign up to send a child to school here - bit.ly/tmasponsorship.
