Celebrating Black History Month Through Work-Life Balance ⚖️ During Black History Month, we honour the countless black individuals who have fought for progress and paved the way for a more equitable future. This year, we want to acknowledge the importance of #worklifebalance as a key component of overall well-being and success, especially within the Black community. Here are some key considerations: ⭕ The historical context: Black communities have often faced systemic barriers to accessing resources and opportunities, leading to increased pressure and stress, both in and outside of work. ⭕ The importance of self-care: Prioritizing mental and physical health is crucial for everyone, but especially for those who navigate additional challenges due to systemic inequalities. ⭕ Creating inclusive workplaces: Fostering a culture of work-life balance benefits everyone, but it's particularly important to support Black employees who may face unique pressures. What can we do? ⚖️ Educate ourselves: Understand the historical and systemic factors that contribute to work-life imbalances within the Black community. 👛 Advocate for change: Support policies and initiatives that promote equity and well-being in the workplace. 💆🏻♀️ Prioritize self-care: Encourage and prioritize mental and physical health practices for all employees, especially those from marginalized communities. 🪅 Celebrate Black excellence: Recognize and amplify the achievements of Black individuals who have championed work-life balance and well-being. --- By taking action and promoting work-life balance, we can contribute to a more just and equitable future for all. As Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth, stated, "Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory, or an acceptance of the way things are. Instead it’s a celebration of progress."    The legacy of this day, and of Opal Lee's successful, decades-long fight to make it a Federal holiday, shows us the value of never giving up hope, and the importance of celebrating the change we can make when we stay committed and come together. Today's a day to celebrate, and also to reflect, educate and learn. It's a day to honor the resilience and contributions of African Americans, and the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.    I had the opportunity to speak to PepsiCo employees during our annual Juneteenth celebration hosted by MOSAIC - a PepsiCo Employee Resource Group that works to make a positive impact on the careers of our Black employees and in our communities. One More 2024 Corporate Goal As we approach the last few days Black History Month, I wanted to share one reason why this month is reinvigorating to Black employees – it’s the opportunity to be seen, heard, recognized, included, and celebrated. Just because Black History Month is ending soon, I encourage you to continue seeing, hearing, recognizing, including, and celebrating your Black employees. While Black History Month is the first diversity month celebration on the US calendar, it’s really the same for all employees. The best companies understand and do this – if you take care of your employees, they will take care of everything else – employees want to be seen, heard, recognized, included, and celebrated. At Convatec, I have the privilege of serving as the Executive sponsor and ally for our Black Employee Network. As Black History Month comes to an end, I wanted to take a moment to thank all our colleagues involved in this year’s activity. Our 2024 theme was ‘Forever caring: unity in diversity’ helping to celebrate our black communities around the world and talk about issues of race, representation, and intersectionality. One area of focus is how we can foster an inclusive culture and ensure we are doing all we can to attract, retain, and develop talented colleagues. While talent is equally distributed, opportunity is not. Addressing this imbalance is a vital focus for us. Employee resource groups are a powerful part of life at Convatec and help elevate the voice of colleagues and energy of our teams to drive progress and change. Last week was a tough one… As more organizations scale back on or engage in more performative well-being and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. I’ve spoken to Black leaders who are facing: ❌ Inquetabile treatment and micro aggressions at work ❌ Their organizations catering to white fragility instead of addressing the systemic issues ❌ Making the choice between continuing to work in a toxic work environment or taking a stress leave ❌ Being told their ideas don’t matter and minimizing their expertise Workplace trauma is something most Black professionals continue to face in the workplace yet it’s rarely addressed. The impact of scaling back on well-being and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives is starting to show. What have you seen in the workplace?
