Dear Attorney Tully: I have been diagnosed with a "chronic" illness. I know I will need more care in the short term and possibly 24-hour care within two years. I am married and want to make this transition as easy as possible on my family. Any thoughts? We’re so used to our parents living independently that we don’t always notice when they begin to struggle with handling daily activities. Changes can begin gradually as they start to slow down, or they can happen quickly, when a parent has an unexpected diagnosis or accident. No matter if you live across town or across the country, proactively creating a senior life plan for your parents will give you peace of mind and allow them to continue to live their lives to the fullest. Here is a checklist to begin planning for the need for care:

Accomplished director, nurse, and former Sandhurst trained Army Officer, with 30 years of public service. Patient-focussed, team-oriented, inclusive leader of multi-disciplinary teams; ally and diversity champion.
Morning network. A pretty reflective morning after reading of Rob Burrow CBE death yesterday and his five year journey with Motor Neurone Disease. Why reflective? As anyone who has ever been a carer will attest: waking up without a day of occupation, the sleepless nights from hearing a life-assisting machine bleep, or alarm; of sweating through Covid that the dressings, drugs, or consummables might not arrive, or that the one visitor (who you are desperate for as you’re so isolated) could be the one that brings the virus to your door. To the five years of extreme fatigue for being an invisible carer, and the turning of your family home into a hospital, to the awful realisation this morning that you have ‘nothing to do’. No feed changeovers, no laundry, no appointments, no bag emptying, no re-ordering of stock, no wondering if this day will be the last. It is invisibly exhausting and yet the absence of that occupation is full of emotion too big to describe. So this morning, Lindsey Burrow and your incredible three children. I see you, I walk with you through the burden of releasing your grief and fatigue, and we all carry you in our thoughts today. To carers everywhere: we see you too. The quiet compassion and resilience teaches all of us (who profess to be knowledgeable on such matters) that dignity and courage start at home. RIP Rob Burrow CBE, thank you for reminding us all of the strength of the carers. To those in healthcare, this is why I do it. If one moment of my work made any patient journey smoother, pain free or less burdensome for those doing the caring, then I have truly made a difference. #carers #compassion #MND #motorneuronedisease #resilience #respect #courage #dignity #NHS #family #integratedurgentcare

Managing guilt when making the difficult decision to move a loved one into #memorycare can be incredibly challenging. Here are three tips to help you navigate this emotional process: 💙 Acknowledge Your Feelings: Feeling guilty is a normal part of the caregiving journey. It’s okay to experience guilt but try not to let it overwhelm you. Please recognize that you’re human, and no one can do it all. Accept your emotions and permit yourself to feel them. 💙 Involve Other Family Members: Include family members in the decision-making process. Discuss the situation openly and seek their input. Sometimes, sharing the responsibility can alleviate guilt and provide a broader perspective on what’s best for your loved one. It can also strengthen family bonds and ensure everyone is on the same page. 💙 Seek Support and Self-Care: Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about your feelings. Guilt can be isolating, but sharing your emotions with others who understand can be comforting. Prioritize self-care—nourish yourself emotionally, physically, and mentally. 👼 Our #AngelCompanions professional companion caregivers can help mom or dad transition and help your family navigate this new normal. Trained in the unique needs of #dementiacare, we can be the compassionate bridge you need. www.angelcompanions.us

VP of SchoolMed Operations | Servant Leadership | Closing Gaps in Children's Healthcare | Connecting Healthcare Realities and Business Success
REMINDER: Empathy isn't reserved for serious illnesses; it extends to every situation. Our patients and their families aren't just cases; they are fellow human beings in need of help and respect. "Worried parents" deserve the same level of understanding, and so do the patients. 🔴 The "wheezer" in room 3 is not a label; it is the man who is scared and having trouble breathing. 🤒 The "fever" in room 1 is not a label; it is a little girl who is missing a friend's birthday party that she has looked forward to all week. 🚼 And the "infant" in room 5 is not here because of an over-active parent. That baby is here because the new parents are trying to do their best, and no one has ever told them that a temperature of 99.5 is not a fever in an infant. All three examples are patients that need empathic caregivers, and can provide peace in these challenging situations. Let's embody empathy through active listening, addressing concerns, providing reassurance, and offering education—always without belittling. #empathymatters #healthcare #leadershipcoaching

Taking care of a loved one can take a lot of work and it's easy to put their needs above your own. Caregivers are less likely than others to get preventative health services, like annual checkups, and to practice regular self-care. As a result, they are at a greater risk of physical and mental issues. It's important to prioritize self-care so that you can be there for your loved one. It's also important to have others around you supporting when they can. You shouldn't have to live in fear of 'what if something happens to me while I'm caring for my loved one'. Let CheckinBee provide some peace of mind and a safety net while you focus on you and that long-awaited annual checkup.
