Highly Sensitive Quantitative Imaging for Monitoring Single Cancer Cell Growth Kinetics and Drug Response Traditional methods of studying cell growth and drug response involve laborious sample preparation and invasive techniques that alter cell function. By eliminating the need for exogenous labels, SLIM (Spatial Light Interference Microscopy) avoids potential perturbations or interference with cellular processes. Researchers used SLIM to measure the growth of individual and bulk cancer cells treated with estradiol and antiestrogen over time. They could directly measure cell area, volume, and dry mass, providing insights into cell growth kinetics. Quantifying these results at individual and bulk cell levels over long time scales without invasive techniques is currently only available through SLIM. Danti et al. highlights how 3D biomaterial-assisted in vitro models are transforming cancer research by offering a more accurate representation of tumor biology compared to traditional 2D cultures.
