Inspired by the stunning scenery of Hong Kong Victoria Harbour and the development of Kai Tak Area, Richard Breslin, Senior Principal and Director of Populous shared the design rationale of Kai Tak Sports Park's Main Stadium and the idea concept of Pearl of the Orient. “A very simple, pure form of Kai Tak Sports Park’s Main Stadium sitting on the Victoria Harbour edge reflects the historical trade and business within this area. The two-way curvature of the façade captures any type of light, which enhances the overall effect and creates a shimmering effect from day to night,” explained Richard. The design process behind the Main Stadium is also intriguing. “Despite the Main Stadium’s simple design, its creation involved a highly complex process. The initial design started with excess of 8,000 different sized panels, presenting a formidable challenge on installation. We had then rationalized the curvature both ways; applied parametric modelling; then adjusted the panel sizes, spacing and arrangement. As a result, we got it down to only two different panel sizes which greatly facilitated the construction of the Main Stadium.” said Richard. Stay tuned for more stories behind Kai Tak Sports Park and get ready to ride on the exciting sports and cultural journey together! 🎭 2032 or 1932? Why Brisbane Olympics is a Laughing Stock! 🏟️ Brisbane’s plans for the smallest Olympics in over a century have been unveiled, sparking criticism and concern. The Queensland government's new images for the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre (QSAC) show a modest 40,000-capacity stadium, starkly contrasting with previous Olympic stadiums like the Stade de France and SoFi Stadium. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Minimalist Design: The QSAC features just one permanent covered grandstand with temporary seats, leading some to label Brisbane a "hillbilly town." 2️⃣ Missed Opportunities: A global design alliance, including local Brisbane architectural practice Buchan, Nikken Sekkei Ltd, and HKS, Inc., proposed modern, sustainable "legacy building" stadiums built from timber and featuring blended greenery. These designs could have created iconic, distinctly Australian stadiums. 3️⃣ Government Decisions: Queensland Premier Steven Miles rejected a $2.7 billion Gabba redevelopment and instead opted for retrofitting existing venues. This decision has drawn criticism for missing a "once in a generation" opportunity to elevate Brisbane's global profile. 📝 Highlighted by HKS Director Andrew Colling, the proposed timber-rich designs could have featured a parkland observation deck and a cocoon of timber and sandstone, creating something uniquely South East Queensland and distinctly Australian. 🔗 Learn more about Brisbane's controversial Olympic plans and the alternatives that could have set a new standard: https://lnkd.in/gjdzQ738 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can cities balance cost constraints with the need to create iconic and sustainable venues for global events like the Olympics? The Queensland Liberal Opposition seems to want to play their usual negative tactic when it comes to criticising controversial but measured "backflips". With the recent decisions regarding the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, they would be well advised to look at what Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 are doing to make their Games more sustainable, environmentally, and economically. https://lnkd.in/dK3ufsEq "95% of Paris Olympic venues that will be existing facilities or that will be dismantled for reuse after the Games, as the city seeks to make sustainability its chief legacy." #olympics #olympicgames #sustainability.

Belmont Stakes Upgrade Belmont Park, home to the Belmont Stakes and a cornerstone in American horseracing history since 1905, is poised for a transformative reconstruction. This landmark, originally designed in 1968, has stood as a testament to the sport's enduring legacy and its ability to captivate generations. The upcoming project, led by Populous, marks the first new racetrack construction in over four decades, aiming to pay homage to Belmont's storied past while introducing a modern architectural language. This endeavor is not just about creating a state-of-the-art facility; it's about weaving the rich history of Belmont Park into a forward-looking design that respects tradition while embracing the future. For architects and designers, the project represents a unique opportunity to observe how contemporary design principles can enhance and preserve the historical essence of such an iconic venue. https://loom.ly/-pIwm9I #stadium #architecture #design

Senior Vice President of Railway Division at Getzner Werkstoffe GmbH Product Management/Product Development/Marketing & Communications
As a sports fan I am proud to say - Olympic games, not without us! For years, Paris has been preparing to host the grand Summer Games. Getzner also contributed to ensuring that the competitions can take place with minimal disruptions: 🌟 Taverny Water Sports Center: A total of 1000 m² of acoustic flooring was delivered and installed to ensure optimal impact sound insulation. Acoustic Floor Blocks were also used, providing excellent sound insulation, vibration isolation, and durability for top-notch acoustics throughout the facility. 🏗️ Saint-Ouen Accommodations: In the Paris district of Saint-Ouen, a residential building was constructed using CLT (cross-laminated timber) technology. This construction method uses cross-glued wooden layers for high stability and strength. Two residential units are equipped with Getzner point bearings, offering effective noise and vibration isolation. 🤸♂️ Saint-Denis Sports Hall: An 800 m² sports hall was fitted with special boxes containing integrated springs. This innovative solution provides athletes with extra comfort during their training and competitions by ensuring silence and reducing vibrations, thereby preventing disturbances within the building. 🚇 Grand Paris Express: Getzner solutions are also used in the expansion of metro lines 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 to protect buildings and surroundings from vibrations and noise.
