I agree with integrating with existing systems but also ensuring that technology benefits the most disadvantaged and does not increase the digital divide. If we start with a focus on the most disadvantaged (e.g. those living in more isolated, rural communities, children with barriers to their learning) then the rest will fall into place. Trickle down rarely works.

Important call to action on #IDE2025. AI and EdTech have the potential to accelerate progress by providing time-saving tools for teachers, personalized support for students, and quality data to monitor progress. But products must be built with rigorous standards. Currently, most (93%) EdTech products targeting LMICs are being developed without evaluating their impact on learning outcomes – this must change or learners in these countries will be left behind. Today, on International Day of Education, we're proud to share the collective voice of education advocates, researchers, implementers, and technologists across Africa to share our vision for the future of education. Together, we've drafted this call to action that addresses one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Our collective commitment to change has never been stronger. We're witnessing unprecedented momentum with thirteen African nations pledging to end learning poverty by 2035, and President Hakainde Hichelima of Zambia championing foundational learning across the continent. This year's theme "AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation" speaks directly to our shared vision. When thoughtfully implemented, AI-based education technologies can transform learning by: ✅ Providing personalised support for students ✅ Equipping teachers with innovative tools and resources ✅ Delivering data-driven insights for education systems Yet we must do more. With only 0.7% of African startup funding going to EdTech in 2022, we need increased investment in contextually relevant solutions - developed with instructional rigour, evidence, equity, and safeguarding at their core. Building a resilient and sustainable EdTech Ecosystem in Africa requires collaboration and support from the key Regional and Pan-African Bodies such as the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), African Development Bank (AfDB, Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), UNESCO Africa among others. The critical role played by these Pan-African bodies in fostering a sustainable and impactful EdTech ecosystem across the continent cannot be overemphasised. Therefore, as we continue to tackle challenges in access, innovation, scalability, and sustainability, collaboration among and with these bodies is vital for the following kEY reasons. 📌 Support policy frameworks for inclusive digital education. 📌 Promote partnerships that drive technological and educational advancements. 📌 Enable shared resources to empower EdTech entrepreneurs and educators. 📌 Harmonize standards and best practices for scaling EdTech solutions across borders. This evolution is vital for addressing Africa's diverse and complex issues, demanding innovative and multifaceted solutions. 🔍 Current Context in Africa: #1. Collaboration and Teamwork: The World Bank reveals that 80% of African educational institutions still rely on traditional rote learning, often missing out on collaborative and interactive experiences. Yet, momentum is building. The 2020 African Higher Education Summit highlighted the urgent need for group-based learning to boost engagement and problem-solving skills. #2. Cross-Disciplinary Thinking: The African Union’s Agenda 2063 stresses integrating cross-disciplinary approaches to tackle major issues like climate change, health crises, and economic development. Despite progress, only 15% of African universities offer structured interdisciplinary courses, compared to over 30% in developed countries. #3. Unified Commitment to Global Challenges: Africa is set to face a 2.5°C temperature rise by 2050, impacting agriculture and water resources.
