🌿 Building a Nature Positive Future in San Francisco! 🌿 Last week, I had the privilege of convening with over 40 passionate individuals through the World Economic Forum Commission on Nature Positive Cities. This deep dive session Presidio Trust was a result of San Francisco Mayor London Breed’s vision when she joined this Commission last Fall to work with cities around the world to develop a playbook to overcome challenges to implementing a nature positive agenda for our urban cities. 🌍✨ Despite 44% of cities' global GDP being estimated at risk from nature loss, only 35% of the world’s 500 most populous cities have developed a dedicated strategy focused on nature or biodiversity preservation. A nature-positive city actively works to halt and reverse nature and biodiversity loss, and ensuring the connection of all individuals to natural ecosystems. This involves integrating nature into urban planning to create long-term sustainable, resilient, and biodiverse urban environments. 🌱🏙️ We tackled the challenges head-on, sharing innovative strategies and lessons that will be invaluable and connected with similar deep dive sessions in other international port cities, Baraquilla, Colombia, Belem do Para, Brazil, Incheon, South Korea, and Durban, South Africa. These are sistercities striving to create greener, more resilient urban environments. 🌱🏙️ One of the many highlights was joining my friend and parks leader General Manager Philip Ginsburg and Lindsey Prowse to sign onto the 1 trillion tree (1t.org) pledge, reinforcing our city’s unwavering commitment to biodiversity and equity. 🌳🤝 This pledge is a testament to our dedication to continue conserving, restoring, and growing our urban biodiversity and canopy, ensuring a healthier and more inclusive future for all San Franciscans. There were so many amazing friends, agencies, and community partners that joined giving me hope for a green biodiverse future through this and our ReimaginingSF initiative. Special thanks to Cristina Gómez Garcia-Reyes with WEF for her leadership, our incredible partner organizations (sorry if I missed you!) that participated in the deep dive: San Francisco Environment Department Friends of the Urban Forest, Citizen Film, Sutro Stewards, California Academy of Sciences American Forests Arbor Day Foundation, C40 Cities, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission San Francisco Public Works Nature in the City California Natural Resources Agency San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department 1t.org Taro AI Megan Morikawa, PhD Carolina Leonhardt Louisa Brown Ben Wilinsky Monte Wilson Peter Brastow Jerome Foster II Cyndy Comerford Brian Wiedenmeier Jon Swae Maria Durana Spencer Potter Cynthia Wu🌟 Let’s continue to collaborate, innovate, and inspire each other as we work towards a nature-positive future! 💚 #NaturePositive #Sustainability #UrbanForests #Biodiversity #Equity #SanFrancisco #1tOrgPledge #CommunityEngagement
