Taronga Conservation Society Australia’s Post

Congratulations to our very own Work Health and Safety Specialist Jason Dearmer who was recognised last weekend as Dubbo’s 2025 Citizen of the Year in the annual Australia Day Awards. It’s well deserved; Jason has spent countless years volunteering for organisations like Cancer Council NSW and local sporting clubs, just to name a few. He used his speech to encourage others to volunteer for a cause they care about (you can read some of Jason's speech below). We are incredibly proud of the many volunteers that enrich our Taronga community, but we’re also proud of the many Taronga people who choose to donate their time outside of work to make our wider Dubbo community a better place to live. Congratulations Jason, and thanks for everything you do! “Right now, though, our community needs support more than ever. We need your skills, your time, your compassion – because these are the resources that will help us grow, connect, and thrive. Whether you can give an hour a week or a day a month, it all counts. Every bit of your contribution matters. “And I want to emphasize this: you don’t have to be a hero to volunteer. You just need to be willing – willing to lend a hand, to listen, to show up. Because when we come together, we don’t just help others. We create connections – connections with each other, with the land we live on, and with the world we’re all a part of. “So, I’m asking you today: How will you help? “Every single act of service, no matter how small, has a profound impact. The small moments of kindness and effort add up in ways we can’t always see, but they matter. “And here’s something I want to share with you: When we give our time and energy to others, we receive so much more in return. We gain joy, purpose, new skills, and, most importantly, new friendships. These are the unexpected rewards of volunteering. “But don’t just take my word for it. Try it for yourself. Find a cause that speaks to you. Maybe you’ll choose to support the youth in our community, your local sporting club, help care for our environment, volunteer at our incredible Taronga Western Plains Zoo, or visit patients at the hospital. Whatever you choose, I promise you’ll experience the incredible joy that comes from giving back. “Thank you all for being here today and for considering how you can make a difference. Our community is stronger when we all contribute, and I look forward to seeing what we can do together.” Jennifer Cowley OAM Bridget Bartlett Daily Liberal #volunteering #community
