Hello friends family and acquaintances today is NATIONAL WILDLIFE DAY - September 4! National Wildlife Day on September 4th encourages improved awareness of the species around us and in the broader world. This National Day focuses on endangered species, preservation, and conservation efforts around the world. Zoos, aviaries and marine sanctuaries provide a variety of ways to get involved. No matter where you live, opportunities abound to learn and participate in the day. Wildlife doesn't only exist in the forest or outside the city limits. Look closely. The creatures and animals sharing our world live under our feet and in the sky above us. Our rivers, lakes and oceans are teeming with wildlife of all sizes. It's essential to understand how we impact the habitats that animals need to survive. Their homes supply their food and shelter. Since wildlife relies on a stable habitat, understanding conservation and preservation is important. Developing strategies helps to maintain existing habitats and repair or replace those that have been destroyed. These strategies are especially important when a decline in a species is detected. For example, each year in August, International Whale Shark Day brings attention to the plight of the world's largest fish. Despite efforts, the gentle giant continues to decline in numbers. Around the world, facilities and organizations will present seminars and educational programs. Additionally, podcasts and documentaries alert us to the changing conditions for various species around the world. Some may be as close as your own backyard. When you join a GVI wildlife conservation program, you’ll spend time doing real, on-the-ground research on animals and their habitats. This could include working with large herbivores like rhinos, participating in bird research, or even setting up animal camera traps to monitor wildlife. The 4th December every year is World Wildlife Conservation Day. When I mention the words wildlife conservation, the vast majority of people I know wander off to exotic climates and endangered species, that they have never encountered in person, and mutter a melancholic statement about how awful it is, but what can they do about it? So many people think that wildlife conservation is not something that they, as an individual, can have an impact on, because it is something that is happening elsewhere, or something which is beyond their influence, or something they know little about. So let me do my bit to help raise awareness. According to the Wildlife Trusts: 🍄 Here in the UK, we are classified as one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries. 🍂 Nearly 1 in 6 of the more than ten thousand 10,000 species assessed in a massive study (16%) are at risk of being lost forever. 🍄 This is much higher for some groups such as birds (43%), amphibians and reptiles (31%), fungi and lichen (28%) and terrestrial mammals (26%) The truth is, that wildlife is on the decline, right here, right now, and we can do our little bit to help slow that down, or even support it to regenerate. Group efforts really are impactful, even when each individual only contributes a small amount. So what small things can you do? One of the main things which contributes to nature loss is habitat decline, so small actions you can take include: 🍄 Making sure you take your litter home, and picking bits up to dispose of appropriately when you are out enjoying natural spaces. 🍂 Making parts of your garden more wildlife friendly, letting some parts stay wild instead of being manicured, thinking about what you plant and whether it will be supportive of species diversity etc. 🍄 Respecting natural habitats and not accessing them in ways which contribute to their decline (be respectful of the impact you might have when accessing natural spaces. Who lives there? What impact will you have on them? Can you access that space without leaving a trace?). Lynx Released in the Highlands: A Milestone for Wildlife Conservation In a historic step for wildlife conservation, the lynx has been reintroduced to the Scottish Highlands after centuries of absence. Once native to Britain, the Eurasian lynx was driven to extinction in the region approximately 1,000 years ago due to hunting and habitat loss. This reintroduction project, supported by conservationists, ecologists, and local communities, represents a significant move towards restoring ecological balance and rewilding the Highlands. The Eurasian Lynx: A Missing Predator The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is a medium-sized wild cat characterized by its tufted ears, spotted coat, and short tail. As an apex predator, the lynx plays a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by controlling herbivore populations, particularly deer. Overgrazing by deer has been a persistent challenge in the Highlands, leading to habitat degradation and hindering forest regeneration. Reintroducing the lynx is expected to address these issues, fostering a more sustainable and biodiverse environment. The Reintroduction Project The project, spearheaded by organizations like the Lynx UK Trust, involved years of research, planning, and community engagement. Extensive studies were conducted to ensure the Highlands could support a viable lynx population. Factors such as prey availability, habitat suitability, and potential human-wildlife conflicts were thoroughly assessed.
