Clan tartan, also known as tartan, is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors. These bands may be plain or striped. Tartan originates from Scotland and is largely associated with Highland dress, including kilts. Tartan is an integral part of Scottish heritage and culture. Each Scottish clan would traditionally have its own unique tartan pattern to distinguish itself from other clans. Over time, various tartans became associated with certain clans and continues to be woven accordingly. 🏴 While some very old clan tartans exist, most were first recorded in the 19th century during a tartan craze. Weavers in Scotland developed different weaving techniques to create the intricate patterns of tartan. The colors used also had meaning such as reds symbolizing blood or bravery.
