In response to the latest headlines of top Black women leaders who have been interpersonally and systemically targeted by racism and sexism, I collaborated with my dear friend Marissiko Wheaton-Greer, Ph.D. of Greer Consulting to create this infographic to illustrate the common challenging themes that Black women face in the workplace and in academia. We know too well the cycle of how misogynoir allows organizations to hire us to expand diversity in the workforce, but then predictably protect and uphold hostile work environments that ultimately push us out or silence us. Here is a typical lifecycle of a Black woman employee and the ways we experience the compounding effects of racism and sexism in the workplace. Each generation brings unique strengths, and embracing the richness of a multigenerational workforce is key to fostering an inclusive workplace. How do you do that? Here are practical steps aligned with SHRM principles: 1️⃣ Challenge ageist comments: let's cut out stereotypes and promote respect. 2️⃣ Infuse anti-ageist language into policies and IE&D strategies. 3️⃣ Educate teams on age bias; make age diversity part of the conversation. 4️⃣ Review recruitment processes; focus on competency, not age. 5️⃣ Cultivate intergenerational mentoring programs and cross-functional teams. 6️⃣ Establish truly intergenerational ERGs with value for all. i felt this DEEP in my soul. this is one of the realest, rawest expressions of what so many of us feel. if you are a woman but ESPECIALLY a successful Black woman, you know exactly what she's talking about. the burden and the weight we carry cannot ever be articulated. it's heavy. but damnit, we do it not just for us. we do it for those behind us. it is the great paradox...we want to do what we can to move things forward, we want to be in full expression, but we are equally so tired. We deserve so much more than this. sending you love, rest, fortitude, protection, favor and peace wherever you are.
