The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS)’s Post

Last week, we kicked off the first skills training session of the Sustainable Behaviour Hackathon in which 50 students and teachers from 9 schools convened to learn about behavioural science for sustainability with Fred Dorsimont from Behaven. One of the key messages of the session was that many changes required for a sustainable world depend on individual choices. From what we eat to how we travel or use energy, our everyday behaviours have a significant impact. Research shows that 53% of the solutions to reduce emissions come from adoption behaviours—like switching to electric vehicles or improving home energy efficiency, whilst 9% comes from curtailment behaviours—such as eating less meat or taking fewer flights. Following three hours of skills training in the lead up to the Hackathon at GEMS Founders School - Masdar City next month and on the day itself, students will apply cutting edge behavioural science-based tools to influence sustainable change in their schools in four key areas: Food, Waste, Energy, and Travel.
