Achieving sustainability isn’t just about innovation — it’s also about driving behaviour change. According to the UK Climate Change Committee, 62% of the required emissions reductions depend on people adopting new habits, like reducing meat consumption or choosing public transport. The Sustainable Behaviour Change Hackathon equips students to identify the specific barriers to change within their school and design tailored and actionable solutions that encourage sustainable choices. Some of the work students will be doing include: 🧠 Learning about behavioural science for sustainability 🧠 Choosing a target behaviour to encourage 🧠 Identifying barriers to change 🧠 Creating behaviour change solutions 🧠 Devising and presenting an action plan Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, Leela's Lunches and Food Nation Catering Services L.L.C, the Hackathon will be kicking off with an introductory webinar: ‘Behavioural Science for Sustainability’ on Thursday 16 January. 🌿 Exciting Week Ahead! 🌿 This week, we welcome Cohort 20 to the University of Exeter Business School Circular Economy Masterclass! 🎉 It's very exciting again to bring together such a diverse group of individuals from a variety of industries, all interested in exploring the solutions that #circularity can offer to decarbonise and help build a more resilient, sustainable and equitable world. 🌍 Last week, the UKRI Circular Economy Hub (CE-HUB) hosted their NICER program Circular Economy Showcase event, packed with inspiring presentations. It was encouraging to hear about the progress made through collaboration across academia, industry, and policy—overcoming challenges and driving real impact. Here are a few of my key takeaways that I believe will also be helpful for our new students as they begin the 6-week Masterclass: 🌱 Circularity is about systems change – It’s complex, so we need to be prepared for a challenging yet very rewarding journey! 🤝 Collaboration is key – None of us can tackle these big challenges alone. Working together brings greater impact! 💡 Be curious and think outside the box – This is how innovation happens! Finally, this week is #CEweek2024 in London, and there are many great events (both online and in person) taking place! They are brilliant at demystifying what #CircularEconomy is all about. Which ones are you attending? More details in comments 👇 P.S. Fun fact: The quote comes from a (35 years ?) old song by Pete Seeger celebrating the ‘zero waste commission of the beautiful city of Berkley!’ ♻️🎶

For all researchers at McGill University and The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital)! Research provides an excitement to discover, design and improve treatment outcomes for patients. It is also one of the most polluting industries in the world. Good science means taking responsibility to perform research consciously and fairly, for patients but also other communities affected by unsustainable ways of doing large scale science. Please check the Lunch & Learn Workshop below to learn about some simple and effective initiatives we have to make lab spaces and (hopefully soon clinic spaces) more sustainable while maintaining research excellence. The McGill Office of Sustainability together with great researchers including Philip Thorne (The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) ), Alexandra Shedov (Clinical Research Unit at The Neuro), Juliet Guay (Jewish Hospital), Kayla Heney (Rosalind & Morris Goodman Cancer Institute, McGill University) and many more invested a lot of work into understanding and solving the complexity of lab-related sustainability over the past years. Go check out the workshop!
🔬🌱 Practical Steps to Make Your Lab More Sustainable—Lunch & Learn Workshop 🌍 Join us on October 29 for the virtual workshop "Sustainability Lunch & Learn: Beyond buzzwords – Steps towards operating a sustainable lab" to learn how PIs, lab managers and trainees can reduce their lab’s environmental impact and work towards Bronze Sustainability Certification. Organized by HBHL and the McGill Office of Sustainability, the session will feature sustainability experts and insights from Kimberly John, Sustainability Officer at McGill University, and Philip Thorne, Lab Manager at The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital), whose lab has achieved Gold Sustainability Certification. Bonus: The first 10 labs to complete their sustainability certification assessments as part of the workshop will receive free lab-grade outlet timers! Don't miss this opportunity, sign up today ➡ mcgill.ca/x/w8x #Sustainability #Research #Labs #EnvironmentalImpact #HBHL #McGill 🌍

Arizona State University students will now need to take a class on conservation or the environment in order to graduate. That sustainability requirement can be filled with a few course options writes Kristin Toussaint in Fast Company A class called “Wilderness and Parks in America” dives into conservation, and the relationship between the environment and recreation. “The Sustainable Plate” explores the food system and how someone’s dietary choices affect not only their own health, but the environment (and the people who produce our food). A course titled “Society, Supply Chains and You” touches on how supply chains work, focusing on where products come from and how the sustainability of certain resources can come into play. These courses are meant to highlight how interdisciplinary the topic of sustainability is, says Anne Jones of ASU. “One of the things that became clear from the workshops was that students wanted the category and the content to be presented in a way that was actionable and it was relevant for their lives,” Jones says. “We were being told very directly, ‘we don’t need a class to be told stuff. We need a class to be able to sift through things, to make decisions.’” read more below: #sustainability #innovationineducation #systesmchangethinking #futureofwork #futureofeducation #interconnectedness #systemschange #interdisciplinary #action #planetandeducation https://lnkd.in/eBBBdPUp

For the sake of sustainability, we need to educate those who have not been to school for a long time. This is the topic about which I wrote an opinion article in Estonian - https://lnkd.in/dWFYQfj4 Because I believe that if you actually know about the facts, research and reality about the state of sustainability, there is no way that you do not act for the sake of it. Or what do you think? Is it education and awareness that we are missing to move the big players and masses toward sustainability?

🌍 Sustainability isn’t just about shopping at organic markets or driving electric cars. It’s about understanding and reducing our carbon footprint in all aspects of life. Many people who don't consider themselves as "environmentalists" often lead lifestyles that are inherently more sustainable than those who actively promote their green habits. 💡 So, what exactly is sustainability? How do we define it beyond the marketing buzzwords? And more importantly, how can we act to preserve the natural beauty of our Earth? 🌱 I believe that sustainability should be a standard, not a specialty. It should be a matter of course that all products are designed to be sustainable and long-lasting and that raw materials are carefully used during the production process and hopefully soon non-renewable raw materials will be used. 👶 That's why education is crucial. Educating our children—the adults of tomorrow—about sustainability is perhaps more important than any product. They are the ones who will inherit this planet, and understanding how to care for it is essential. 🎲 With this in mind I’m proud about the Green Planet Explorer line from Hape. Through play, this series teaches children about sustainability and environmental protection, making learning about our planet fun and engaging. 🌟 Let's inspire the next generation to respect and protect our planet. And lets hope that we adulds can learn something from our children. 🌍 Keep always in mind our beautifull blue plantes blongs to our children and not to us! #Sustainability #Education #GreenPlanetExplorer #Toynamics #Hape #FutureGenerations
