We had an insightful exchange this morning at our Brussels office with representatives from many industries and sectors operating in the EU Single Market, newly re-elected MEP David McAllister (Vice President of EPP) and Günther Oettinger, member of our Global Advisory Board.
The points I take away from the discussion are:
- The urgency to address the level of bureaucracy for our industry. Companies are now facing hundreds of delegated and implemeting acts stemming from adopted legislations. How will businesses tackle with these compliance requirements?
- The need to have better oversight on the legislations that are being produced and a clear structure to address better regulation.
- Having a clear denomination of Commissioners' portfolios (ie. Trade, Security & Defence, Competition, Single Market, etc.)
- Top priorities for the next 5 years: Economy, competition, security & defence to establish a single market for defence and invest in the European #defence industry, migration and better regulation.
We have interesting months ahead of us during which the Commission will nominate its new President, the Parliament will form its committees, Mission Letters will be drafted and new Commissioners will be appointed. These important milestones will shape and set the tone of the next 5 years for Europe, businesses and citizens, but now is the time to position yourselves.

Kekst CNC were honored to host David McAllister MEP (DE), Vice-President of the European People's Party, at this morning's breakfast discussion, which followed Europe's elections and last night's #EUCO meeting. A special introduction was made by our Global Advisory Board Member and former Vice-President of the European Commission, Günther H. Oettinger. We discussed the future of Europe and what it means for business.
After its election victory, the EPP is likely to lead a centrist coalition. However, the response from policymakers to results that saw the Greens lose seats and the right gain seats remains to be seen. Reducing regulation to support business and boost competitiveness, deepening the Single Market, such as in security and defense, and progressing trade agreements are all expected to feature high on the agenda.
Unaffiliated parties continue to find new allies, the Commission President will soon be nominated, and political groups will finalize coalition agreements. Key questions include: might the EPP seek support from the right on certain issues, and what could this mean for coalition stability? How will the new President organize the Commission and determine its priorities? Will this lead to a tangible roadmap for reform in Europe over the next five years?
