From Pool Laps to Potential Triathlons – My Continuing Journey On May 18th, I celebrated a significant milestone at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, completing the Swim 22 challenge a month ahead of schedule. This 22-mile swim was more than a test of endurance; it marked a transformative journey towards better health and greater community impact. Starting with a jarring glimpse of myself in photos, I embarked on this challenge not only to support Diabetes UK but to dramatically improve my own health. The results? A loss of 22kg of excess weight, a gain of 10kg of muscle, massively reduced blood pressure and an invigorated spirit ready to take on more challenges. As I look ahead to doubling my swim distance next year to 44 miles, there’s a whisper of an even bigger challenge on the horizon. Come 2026, I’m contemplating entering a sprint triathlon (there, I said it out loud and in Public) subject to my by then 58 year old hips and knees hold out. This idea, once unimaginable, now feels within the realm of possibility, thanks in no small part to my network's incredible support and motivation and the tangible results I've achieved through sheer persistence and community support. This isn't just about setting personal records. It’s about pushing personal and communal boundaries and inspiring others to make substantial impacts. The journey from swimming laps in a local pool to potentially tackling a triathlon is a testament to what can be achieved when we commit to continuous self-improvement and support each other in our collective goals. I remember the first time I tried my hand at a similar event; the mixture of nerves and excitement was palpable. Martinus E. didn’t set out to be a game changer in the sport of running, yet through the development of the Slow AF Run Club, that’s exactly what he’s doing. Back in 2012, feeling some pain in his hip, he made an appointment to see his doctor to get it checked out. “That doctor said, ‘Mr. Evans, you are fat. You have two options: lose weight or die,” Evans recalls of his visit, explaining that the doctor told him he had to start walking to lose weight. “I responded, ‘Screw you and screw walking; I’m going to run a marathon.’” And run a marathon is exactly what Evans did. To date, Evans has run eight marathons, including New York City and Marine Corps, and he has competed in hundreds of races. Through his journey with running, he realized that there was no information for runners of his size. How should he fuel for runs? How should he hydrate? As Evans puts it, there was a hole in the running community—no one championing the back of the pack. And that is how the Slow AF Run Club was born. Evans wanted a space for all types of people to feel included and supported. What started as 40 people ballooned to 4,000 to 5,000 during the pandemic, and the momentum has continued to grow since. This rowing season ended in failure for me. Despite gruelling training and exhausting preliminaries, I didn't make my club's Henley Royal Regatta crew. For those who've followed my journey, you know how much that goal meant to me. The Stats since September: The Stats: ◾ 417 sessions (254 hours, 2,746,262 meters) – equivalent to 65 marathons, just over 7 marathons every month! ◾ That's nearly 2 sessions every day for 9 months! ◾ Countless hand blisters – rowers’ hands are a sorry sight. The Output: A year ago, my 2km time on the indoor ergo was 7:11. This year, it’s 6:56 – a significant 15-second improvement for an already fit rower! The Why: So, what drove me to prioritise all this, sometimes over my sanity? The idea that I might make my 8-person club crew (9 with the Cox!), just to earn the privilege of trying to qualify for Henley. You don't automatically get to race at the most prestigious regatta in the world. The Outcome: You can imagine my disappointment when I learned two weeks ahead of the regatta qualifiers that I hadn’t made the cut. Ouch! When you’ve prioritised something as your "Big Rock" for so long, it can be a bitter pill to swallow. This isn’t a sales cliché post promoting my dedication – though feel free to take that away – I just wanted to share some learnings from a challenging time… The Learning: ◾ Like in business, it's about the team and outcomes, not just the individual. ◾ Doing your best and still failing is still success (I’m in the best shape of my life!). ◾ Focus on what you can control – you're only competing against yourself. Ultimately, I didn’t make the crew, but I know I gave it my all. Now, I'll cheer our crew from the side lines! As I write this, I’m here at Henley enjoying exceptional rowing. Another triathlon in the books! This was my favorite race yet, an Olympic-distance tri at beautiful Lopez Lake near San Luis Obispo with a great open water swim, a beautiful bike ride (with killer hill climbs), and a nice lakeside run. This race felt like the first time I really saw the benefits of training with a team and coach pay off. My last triathlon I came out of the swim barely able to walk and having lost all my energy. This time, thanks to my coach and teammates who pushed me in swim practices, I swam at a faster pace than any of my previous races and came out feeling strong and ready to take on the bike. Coincidentally, this triathlon also took place the day after my last final at Stanford. Instead of sleeping in, I had to wake up at 2:30 am and drive 3.5 hours to get to the starting line and check-in. It kind of felt like my “triathlon finals”, as I’d been prepping for this race the whole quarter and this was the test to see how much I’d improved. Reflecting on this past week of intellectual and physical tests has helped me identify my weak points and areas that need improvement. I’ve noticed that the habits/practices that are hurting my school performance are also hurting my physical performance. My small, day-to-day habits and the way I choose to spend my time affect every aspect of my life. So, this spring break I’ll be recovering and reflecting on how to make next quarter better, happier, and more successful. A Greek saying: Stupid people have strong legs! ⬇️ We have all been there: we arrive at a location and realise we have forgotten something important. It happens to everyone. But come race day, it can be race-ruining at worst and stressful at best. The Greek saying encapsulates this. The stupid person forgets things and has to run backwards and forwards to make up for their errors. Therefore, make sure you have a proven list of things you need to take with you and tick things off as they go into the bag, into the car, or whatever means of transport you are taking. As much as we acknowledge that there are people who prefer to do things at the last minute, getting this done ahead of time makes life much easier. We have a helpful kit list which has all of the things you would need for a race, which you can use or evolve into your own: Check out our website for TTH Triathlon Kit List https://lnkd.in/eVsFf9nG Add to this list and ensure you take it with you to the race venue, have your transition stuff packed and ready to go, and have all your nutrition ready. Transition bags are helpful. Even if your race doesn’t have bags in transition, we suggest you use that idea to make sure you have all your T1, T2, and swim stuff ready to go. If they are all in one rucksack, then you just need to grab that, and away you go. So be both: a clever person with strong legs, and ensure you arrive at the start line with everything you need for the day. You don’t need to make your event any more challenging than it already is!!
