To all #chiefofstaff (or similar positions) out there and people who want to become one: I highly recommend reading this superb #mckinseyinsights article, which summarizes the role’s opportunities and challenges so well!
You find my top 5 advices from my personal #experience (supplementary to the article) below:
➡ Remember: It’s a #relationship between two human-beings! Both, the principle and the COS possibly struggle with insecurities and doubts we all occasionally experience - and that’s totally fine! Take the opportunity to #support each other in difficult times.
➡ High measures of self-restraint and #humility are crucial. As a COS (or similar) you will probably have different insights & perspectives than the CEO. If the CEO has to make certain #decisions and you don't understand them at the time, give it a chance: Your principle has his/her own experiences and reasons why s/he makes this decision - trust in their assessment and stay #humble . Disagree but commit!
➡ Understand the #priorities of the CEO and create derivatives of them so you can make them yours. Since you need to see the big-picture, have the attention to details and the understanding of the front lines, you must make sure to understand the CEO’s priorities at the very beginning in order not to lose sight of them during the hectic daily routine.
➡ Lead by #asking : Yes, you also lead your CEO, not only s/he leads you. Since the COS is usually privy to the principal’s most sensitive concerns and should serve as his/her trusted sounding board & adviser, it is required to ask a lot of #questions, repeatedly, sometimes even the same question in different ways in case of critical topics. It’s important to be on the same page.
➡ Don’t underestimate your #power , don’t exploit it and don’t be naive. Some colleagues will support you & your initiatives because they like you / believe in your #vision . However, there will also be colleagues that help you because of your role, not because of your personality, and because they think they „have to“, not because they want. Therefore: Use your power fairly, intelligently and don't be naive; use your #emotionalintelligence / emotional antenna to get the right people on board!
I completely agree with the beginning of the article: It's a privileged position that comes with access to top leadership and the most pressing corporate agendas. However, it also requires intense focus, which you'll have with the right people around you (which I'm super glad I had!).
