Putting down a few thoughts following 3 busy days at EUROBIKE 2024. I'll open with E2 DRIVES showcasing its Owuru integrated motor gearbox e-bike unit at EUROBIKE SHOW 2024*. For me, Owuru is even bigger news than their already transformative "Bye Bye derailleur" messaging suggests. A new drivetrain format - motor and gearbox as one - showing signs of gaining traction in the e-bike space potentially signals the begining of a major shift in power (and business structure /processes), within the bike industry. "How so?" you ask. Even the biggest bike brands on the planet are effectively dictated to by the leading drive train component manufacturers - Lead times / MOQ / Up front payments (18 months or more) to secure future orders. For comparison, in the automotive industry a global car manufacturer isn't told what to do, when, and for how much, by its tier 1, 2, 3 suppliers. E-Mobility @ ZF, a tier 1 auto industry supplier, (re)entered cycling this week. Famous in auto for their gearboxes - I'd be staggering if they didn't follow that up in e-bikes.
