Working alone is hard. For me at least. I can think of a handful of friends and colleagues who have the super power to stay heads-down alone in their work for days or weeks. But, now that I'm fully self-employed I've come to learn 1) I'm actually quite extrinsically motivated 2) I need people. Growing up I thought of myself as very self-sufficient. I took pride in it. It was an unspoken core value in my family circle — So much that it was hard to things like ask for help, celebrating in other's success, or trusting others to get things done "my way." Becoming a manager and leader helped to expose some of these issues, but working alone on something new where in uncharted personal territory is a whole new level. However... I'm super grateful for 1) I know The Lord is using this time to rewire my heart and mind as I develop new habits, skills, and reliance on Him. 2) All the friends, old and new, that have been a huge encouragement to me as I build The Rootful Company. Today, I want to thank Tim Medina for meeting up to cowork at Panera Bread. Tim, is fantastically creative and I love the way he thinks about branding and social media strategy. His LinkedIn content is always inspiring and insightful. I highly recommend following him and supporting him in his new endeavor Stump & Root co.

What's your WHY? When you know WHY you do what you do, the toughest days become easier, you work even harder, and you put your whole heart and soul into it! Life is cumulative, not consecutive. In my life and career I have been or done the following:  - Senior executive for two $3 billion healthcare organization  - Waiter  - Beekeeper(ish)  - Partner in an advertising agency  - Children's book author  - Temporary construction worker  - Grass-cutter  - Non-profit organization executive director  - Country music publicist  - Advice book author  - Consultant  - Public speaker  - Horse wrangler (aka "Bucket Boy")  - Husband  - Newspaper delivery person  - Dad  - Non-profit Board Chair  - Etc. I used to think that life (especially my career) was going to be a consecutive, linear thing. You know... Point A to Point B to Point C and so on. Except that it's not. (At least not for me.) It's not consecutive. It's cumulative. Which can be a little challenging, because sometimes you feel like you are moving backwards or sideways or maybe standing still instead of going forward. But the best, most fulfilling parts of my life are when I am able to see how I harvest the experiences or learnings or successes or failures from every step along the way to inform and improve what I am currently doing. Consecutive would be linear and boring. Cumulative is multiplicative and exciting. Thankful for past millions of experiences that fuel the millions of opportunities. PASSION Each person has his or her passion in doing something which they would gladly do without even thinking twice. Depending on what job or career which you are in. Anyway, PASSION can be in any forms or anywhere whether locally or abroad. In short, whether it stems out from the hobby or even other sources. Well, it is a matter of fact of finding one's CORE of INTEREST in terms of volunteering or not........It also boils down to upbringing and family background. Okay, put it this way my turbulence years had taught me a lot of things in terms of resillience, patience and strategies to be on my toes in whatever situations that I am in. One way or another, it strengthen my foundation in strategising as well as socializing in a more proper manner. When I had started in this company, it was merely a job to pay my bills, medications, doctor's follow up as well as in many other areas. As the years go by, instead of dreading to work like I used to in my previous companies; I enjoy coming to work as I get to learn new things everyday. As I have been given opportunities to know where my strength and weakness are. It takes one to know one. That's how I term my boss. Think about the PASSION whether in your CAREER or VOLUNTEER.....Just my 2 cents thought only.

Reflecting on where I am today, it's incredible to think about the journey I've taken. I’d like to share a part of my story in the hopes of helping you change your “I can’ts” to I cans. I am currently blessed with an incredible job as a  government account manager, a higher income than I ever thought I would earn, great benefits, and a wonderful supportive team. How did I get here? By simply telling myself that I could , putting faith over fear and f’ing going for it! Here’s the thing though. My path was not always smooth. My childhood was very chaotic. My parents were addicts. There was a lot of trauma and NOT  a lot of money. I am a high school dropout. I have multiple health issues and for ten years, I was on  disability. The idea of re-entering the workforce in 2012 terrified me, but deep down, I knew I had to. So, I took a leap of faith and went back to work full-time, despite my fears. Had I read the  job description before my friend convinced me to apply I  would have considered myself unqualified .  But I  put myself out there. I made it through two interviews and was chosen for the role. I spent the next seven (ish) years at that company, some small promotions, developed my skills and refined my abilities and created friendships. I expect to last a lifetime. I once had a member of leadership   tell me that the difference between me and the person who keeps moving up was that she kept applying. Eventually, I took a leap of faith and landed with  the company I am with today. Since joining, I have been promoted multiple times,  my income has grown substantially. I have honed my skillset and adapted to new technologies and in 2020 even  adopted to working  from home, which has been a tremendous blessing in helping me balance health and career. This career is more than anything I ever could have imagined for myself a decade ago. But here's the thing: I stopped telling myself that I couldn't and instead embraced the power of believing that I could.  I started listening to my self talk and then changing it. I started questioning everything  “if they can do it why can’t I? ”I took leaps of faith. I challenged the limitations that I once believed defined me, and proved to myself that with determination, action, and self-belief, anything is possible. Raise your hand if you're the type of over achiever who tries to take the groceries in in one trip. ✋🏼 No. Matter. What. I bought some household goods yesterday and felt a swoop of disappointment when I realized I needed to make multiple trips or elicit some help from the family. The temptation is there at work sometimes to try to superwomen a project over the finish line but collaboration and teamwork is better almost 100% of the time.
