“The scope for raising revenue from alcohol taxes is larger in most African countries than tobacco, but the taxes remain relatively low. We need to address the question of why alcohol taxes receive little attention, compared to tobacco and sugary sweetened beverages, given the relatively high alcohol consumption in Africa.” Chileshe Gloria Mange, Policy Officer speaking on day 2 of The World Bank ECOWAS CEDEAO Health Taxes Workshop in Dakar, Senegal. #TaxJusticeAfrica #MakeTaxesWorkforAfrica Like, comment, share

I am unwavering in my pledge to confront corruption head-on and alleviate the tax burden on our citizens. If entrusted with leadership, I will prioritize the implementation of robust anti-corruption measures to promote transparency and accountability within our government to diminish the necessity for excessive taxation. Furthermore, I acknowledge the pressing need to address specific economic challenges, such as the exorbitant cost of transportation. By significantly reducing and ultimately removing duties on imported spare parts, we can lower operational expenses for transport enterprises, resulting in decreased lorry fares and ultimately contributing to reduced prices for essential commodities, including food. Together, we can forge a brighter future for all, free from corruption and with a lighter tax burden on our people. The existing tobacco tax structure is hardly playing any role towards achieving a tobacco-free Bangladesh. Economists, journalists, and public health experts are now calling for effective tobacco tax and price measures in the upcoming FY 2024 25. https://lnkd.in/g9NEiJ2y

In 2024, advocates have recommended that the Nigerian government charge N130/Litre tax on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs). A bottle of 50 cl sodas now goes for as much as 400 Naira compared to 120 Naira when the sugar tax was signed into law. In May 2024, Nigeria's annual inflation rose to a new 28-year high of 33.95%. Can Nigerians afford another increase in the sugar tax? #Nigeria #sugartax https://lnkd.in/eiyWQg9x

While noting the extreme challenges Nigeria is having with forex and inflation, fixing prices is a dangerous move. The state does not produce the goods it is regulating and producers' margins are quickly eroded. Already FMCG multinationals have exited Nigeria and local companies will also be hard hit. Zimbabwe in the 2000s is an instructive example of where this can lead. The Mugabe government tried to address spiralling inflation with price controls. State operatives were embedded in factories, executives were arrested under suspicion of breaking the decree and other madness. Eventually the economy collapsed. Nigeria should be working with the private sector to unlock a more efficient economy and bring down the cost of doing business. #inflation #statecontrol #privatesector #Nigeria #Zimbabwe #manufacturing #economy

Obasanjo's exposure of the reinstated fuel subsidy in Nigeria lays bare the government's duplicity and lack of political will to implement meaningful economic reforms. The clandestine reversal of the subsidy removal, initially touted as a bold step towards fiscal responsibility, reveals a leadership beholden to vested interests and afraid to confront the entrenched patronage networks fueling Nigeria's economic woes. This policy somersault undermines the government's credibility and perpetuates the cycle of economic stagnation. #Nigeria #EndBadGovernance #FuelSubsidy #EconomicReform #BAT #Obasanjo #EconomicStagnation #Africa #GoodGovernance #Transparency #Accountability https://lnkd.in/eRNr84ik

Public Health Physician, Former Technical Head at Tobacco Control Cell, Ministry of NHSRC Pakistan. Former Technical and Focal person to Who's F.C.T.C for Government of Pakistan.
The recent article by The Guardian, titled "BAT subsidiary lobbies Pakistan to allow export of cigarettes to Sudan", is a clear example of biased and damaging journalism. The story's angle, which insinuates that Pakistan is prioritizing the interests of a foreign tobacco company over its economic well-being, is not only misleading but also harmful to the country's economy. Pakistan is currently facing an economic crisis, with a staggering debt burden of billions of dollars, a huge circular debt, and a desperate need for foreign exchange. The Prime Minister and State Minister of Finance are actively seeking economic support from around the world. In this context, the export of cigarettes to Sudan is a legitimate trade activity that can generate much-needed revenue for Pakistan. It is essential to understand that this article appears to be a paid publication by Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an organization with no stakes in Pakistan and a clear agenda to push Bloomberg's anti-tobacco policies onto the Pakistani government. Notably, this organization operates in Pakistan without legal authority, and its activities are reminiscent of anti-state activities by CSOs that have been barred from working in India. Therefore, we demand that The Guardian retract this damaging article and issue an apology for perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Pakistan. Furthermore, if the export deal goes through, the Pakistani government must ensure that the respective company provides an undertaking that the cigarettes produced for export will not be marketed back in Pakistan, with penalties in place for any future violations by the manufacturing company. We will not tolerate any attempts to undermine Pakistan's economic interests or compromise its sovereignty and the laws of the land. #TheGuardian #PakistanEconomy #TobaccoControl #EconomicSovereignty #ForeignInterference #CSOTransparency #BloombergAgenda #TobaccoFreeKids #CampaignFinance #MediaBias #PakistanFirst

Dear Government of Pakistan , I am paying 26% Income Tax on my salary and I am also fine paying 18% Indirect Tax on almost every product out there. All I ask of you in return is this: - Clean Air - Clean Water - Unadulterated agricultural produce - Clean produce coming out of factories (not excessively chemical / metal infused) - Reliable healthcare available to all (beds available for masses when in need) Basics. Just the basics. You charge salaried folks like we’re living in Europe, but what we get in return is way less than what’s available to even African folks. Pakistan is poised to grow from here. No doubt about that. But it’s important that you take care of those who you’re gonna grow on the backs of. #pakistangovernment #GoP #justice #improvement
