I’m seeing a trend in companies that are in the tech industry. Or more specifically in the app industry. Are we done with apps? It’s been 15 years since the release of the very first iOS SDK. Allowing developers create native apps for the iPhone and not just web based apps. Others followed and so did the app stores. Is 15 years too much or does this industry have more years on its sleeve? Maybe it’s time we start engaging in some new technology. VR comes to mind. But what about apps for devices that are less common, like the Apple TV, or even smart watches. Maybe we’ve given too much focus on the phone that it has become a stagnated market. And just maybe, it has become boring for the users. Even though this post may sound pessimistic, it was not meant that way. It’s just a reflection of what’s happening and an eye opener of potential things to come…

It’s time to focus! I started my journey as a developer with the dream of someday working on video games. That dream did happen but it was not what I expected. Several years later and I still haven’t picked up any game development. But thanks to some recent events I have decided to dive again into game development. So stay tuned for more news related to that.

Who better to speak to #PHP than the creator – and fellow Etsy Distinguished Engineer – himself? On December 7th at 7pm CT, join us virtually or in person at our Mexico Etsy office for an upcoming talk by Rasmus Lerdorf, the man behind this widely-used open-source scripting language. A lot has changed about PHP in the past 30 years. Rasmus will describe how #Etsy uses and deploys PHP at scale, as well as what modern PHP looks like – including new features in PHP 8 and PHP 8.2. And to wrap it up, Rasmus will share what’s kept him motivated and engaged over his now 35-year long tech career. Click in to register and join us! In-person spots are limited to 80 seats at the Mexico City Etsy office but all are welcome to tune into the live stream. #LifeAtEtsy #EngineeringAtEtsy

9moJust like Radio “killed” Newspapers, apps are now part of a bedrock in our digital ecosystem. Apps may not be the top layer anymore, and won’t enjoy the same prominence, but they aren’t going away. It means that app development and maintenance will mature into a more controlled and stable set of practices, procedures, and technologies.
