"He's all sizzle, no steak." Jas Johal's and Richard Zussman's scathing assessment of Ken Sim, FCPA, FCA in "Ken Sim - Our Deeply Unserious Mayor?" on 980 CKNW. (Excerpt) "Now, as I've said, this highlights for me, the bigger issue which essentially is we have a Mayor who is not very serious for a city dealing with very serious challenges. "It's a city with a $2 billion budget, yet still goes cap in hand looking for corporate sponsorship because it has difficulty balancing its books. "You have a fiscal conservative who in the last 2 years raised property taxes by 18%, yet Kennedy Stewart raised property taxes by 24% in 4 years. At the rate this mayor is going, taxes will be even higher than that leftwing Mayor, Kennedy Stewart. "Think about this for a second...community centre fees have gone up, parking fees have gone up. This mayor promised to bring in his 3-3-1 policy which means you'd only have to wait 3 days for approvals when it came to home additions, 3 weeks for townhouses, 3 months for midrises and 1 year for highrises...has any of that come to fruition? I don't think so...no one has seen that. "He's also increased the mayor's budget...it's now a political office more than anything else. "He's run on being trasnparent. Try getting information on FIFA World Cup from him. "And what about infrastructure? Look at the Kits Pool, a landmark in the city. It's not going to be open this summer at all. The Stanley Park train...I don't even think it's wheelchair accessible. And on and on it goes. "He says he wants to fix the Park Board, now he says he wants to get rid of Park Board. That's fine if you agree with him but that tells me he doesn't even get along with his own people. "This man has been handed a super majority and what have we seen from him? Not a lot. And considering he's the first Asian major in the city...congratulations to him, I think that's a wonderful achievement...but has he levereaged that to build the City, to push the City, to challenge the City when it comes to anti-Asian racism in a meaningful way. Has he gotten involved in part of the broader conversation around foreign interference? "He doesn't have the gravitas in my personal opinion. That's what I have seen. He's all sizzle, no steak." Being part of a community, and gathering in person can save lives. Research suggests that social capital (the networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society, enabling that society to function effectively) leads to outcomes like higher trust, an increased sense of connection, better individual wellbeing, and as a result, longer life expectancy*. Festival for the Future (FFF) is a community characterised by pragmatic optimism. This is because it's an event built on intergenerational connection. Festival participants span all ages and backgrounds. They are hungry for a future that is as diverse as it is collective and as purposeful as it is impactful. And they're up for being put on the spot for a dance battle (shoutout to Ben from Create Now, pictured). Last year we worked with Guy Ryan, Katie Trott, and the wider Inspiring Stories team to help translate FFF's values into storytelling opportunities to help champions like Tory Whanau and Quack Pirihi grow the community. This year, we're attending as participants to recharge and find resources for the second half of 2024. After a year that started with conversations where we asked, "is this going to be a harder year than the one the economy shut down for two months so we could stop the spread?", we need to constantly find reframes. And this is the event to do it. Whether you're young or old, fill your cup at Festival. It's happening next Wednesday and Thursday (July 17tn and 18th) at the TSB Arena in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) and there are tickets still available. Hope to see you there. 😊 Tickets at ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gitxZtE *https://lnkd.in/gGJc_SME #FFTF24 #FestivalForTheFuture #ForwardThinking #Changemakers

It’s stress awareness month and as part of that there are things we can all do to aid our own wellbeing. One of the 5 ways to wellbeing is to give. There’s lots of research about the positive effects of taking part in social and community life with some studies showing that people who help others are more likely to rate themselves as happy. Below is a great opportunity with a local charity close to my heart Motiv8 to do just that, whilst improving our community 😊I’m looking forward to taking part! So what ways do you give back? Is there anything you can do today to be kind and helpful to others, however big or small? #wellbeing #stressawarenessmonth
Fancy a different kind of team-bonding that doesn’t involve drinking or an escape room AND helps the environment? 🌊 Led by Motiv8 Youth Advisor Mackenzie Bird, join us and our partners from across the city for a beach clean ahead of the D-Day 80 celebration. This event will be led by young people from across our community, endorsed by the Portsmouth & Southsea Beach Watch, our team of young people, staff, and volunteers. We’l make our way from the Hot walls in Old Portsmouth and Eastney Beach, finishing at the D-Day Museum, helping to prepare the city for this national event of remembrance and celebration. We are inviting you and your colleagues to join us as volunteers, if you are able, both to help clean and help the young people we all support demonstrate pride in their home. Any direct or financial support around equipment, refreshments, or event logistics is also most welcome! 🗓️ Saturday 1st June, 10am at Hot Walls, Old Portsmouth. Partners already confirmed are Sustrans, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Police Cadets, Air Cadets, Portsmouth Mediation Service, The Mary Rose Museum, Portsmouth, The D-Day Story Museum, PYC, URBOND, Film Crew 4u CIC, and Habibur Rahman / The News, Portsmouth. Could our next partner be you?! Email fundraising@motiv8south.org.uk to get involved! #beachclean #southseabeachclean #lifechancesforyoungpeople
