There are massive opportunities if you are an electrical engineer in the UK. The UK have ambitious wind energy targets. Newly announced to double onshore wind generation from 15GW to 30GW by 2030. This will be a huge boost to the already booming energy construction industry. This alone can create up to new 27,000 jobs. But in order to enable the connections, the electrical infrastructure also needs to build five times more what was built over the last 30 years. Not to mention the 15GW to 60GW by 2030 target for offshore wind. These targets all require rapid expansion, and at the heart of all this is the workforce. Electrical engineers will be required at an unprecedented scale over the next 10-20 years.

Importance of a Robust Commissioning Strategy for Offshore Wind Farms Boslan has developed a Corporate Commissioning Manual that serves as a foundation for devising the strategy to be applied in any OW project. Boslan can adapt it to the particularities of any project, and it is a living document that continues to improve with the experiences and lessons learned from Boslan's commissioning services. The key components include: Pre-Commissioning Inspection: This should be conducted before the commissioning phase begins. This involves verifying that all components are installed correctly, assessing the quality of construction, and ensuring compliance with design specifications and regulations. Functional Testing: The strategy should outline detailed procedures for functional testing of each component: the turbines’ power generation capabilities, validating electrical systems, and checking the communication between turbines and the central control system. Grid Connection Testing is a critical aspect of OW farms and should include comprehensive testing of the interconnection with the electrical grid. This ensures that the wind farm can reliably supply electricity to the grid and adhere to grid code requirements. Safety Systems Verification includes emergency shutdown procedures, fire detection and suppression, and personnel evacuation protocols. In addition, an appropriate strategy must comply with the relevant regulations. OW farms must adhere to international standards such as IEC 61400 for wind turbine design and IEC 62282 for electrical systems. The commissioning strategy should align with these standards to ensure compliance and facilitate certification processes, and also include procedures for monitoring and mitigating potential environmental impacts, such as noise levels and wildlife interactions, to meet regulatory requirements. Regulatory compliance extends beyond technical aspects to encompass environmental and permitting regulations. The commissioning strategy Additionally, offshore wind farms must comply with grid codes stipulated by the relevant transmission system operator (TSO). The commissioning strategy should address grid connection requirements and ensure that the wind farm meets the specified technical standards. In conclusion, a well-defined commissioning strategy is indispensable for the successful deployment of offshore wind farms. By systematically addressing integration, risk mitigation, and performance optimization, developers can ensure that the wind farm operates efficiently and reliably. How to Prepare a Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for a Solar PV plants ? 1- Project Information Project Title, Location, Client name ... etc. 2- Scope of Work Description, Specifications. 3- Bill of Quantities (BOQ) detailed information about the materials and quantities required for the Solar PV plant. Here’s how to structure it: a. Solar PV Modules Description, Quantity, Unit, Total Cost. b. Inverters c. Mounting Structures d. Cables and Connectors e. Junction Boxes and Combiner Boxes f. Other Components Description, devices, Quantity, Unit, Total Cost. 4. Labor Costs Installation, Unit, Total Cost. 5. Contingencies and Overheads Contingency: Include a contingency allowance for unforeseen costs or changes. Overheads: Factor in overhead costs such as project management, insurance, etc. 6. Total Project Cost Summarize: Provide a summary of all costs including materials, labor, contingencies, and overheads.
