Our mission to support families experiencing homelessness and at-risk situations in San Francisco is not just a commitment but a united journey of compassion and hope. Today, I want to spotlight the invaluable role of our individual donors. Your support goes beyond financial contributions. Individual donations creates a ripple effect of change, providing stability and empowerment to those who need it most. On the grassroots level, we continue to build seeds of hope and continuation in our work serving close to 8,000 clients in the past years. The Dsquared Homes for the Homeless GAP program assisted our 100th client with rent today! I'm extremely proud of this initiative, which came about from my son being denied temporary housing over a $40 income shortage I wasn't allowed to cover. He lived in Kiwanis Park for one year, and though I fought hard, he never received help. My motto is, "Don't TALK about it, BE about it' because it's more normal to complain about what someone else ISN'T doing (especially the government) than it is to look at ourselves and figure out how WE can make a difference. I founded this nonprofit to assist those experiencing a temporary setback with rent, and it's exactly what we've done without help from the government. I don't believe in excuses, and complaining about what the government wasn't doing, certainly wasn't helping my son when he lived in the park. Dsquared Homes for the Homeless is recruiting an Administrative Assistant (we always need a Fundraising Director) whose role will include representing Dsquared in Zoom meetings with our community partners. My preference for the Admin Position is someone who is retired or only works part-time because they will have the flexibility required for this role. Although we do not have monthly meetings (most of us work while volunteering with Dsquared), we are known well enough that businesses reach out to support our mission through their organizations regularly. This volunteer MUST be a self-starter but does NOT need to live in Arizona as the entire role is supporting us with Admin duties, and representing us on Zoom calls. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that cities can ban and penalize people from sleeping outdoors, including in vehicles. It is without question that Downtown Streets Team (DST) opposes this decision and will continue to support those experiencing homelessness with dignity and grace. Six out of nine justices voted to criminalize homelessness without providing solutions, despite the underwhelming amount of shelter resources across the nation. Arresting and fining individuals for trying to survive is not only cruel, but counterproductive and costly. We demand a future that protects the human rights of all people, regardless of identity or background. Sleeping is a basic need and right. Homelessness is not a crime. Stand with us against the growing cycle of homelessness. 5 places the homeless can get clothes in Denver For those experiencing homelessness, finding adequate clothing is an enduring challenge that significantly impacts their daily lives. The struggle to secure clean, appropriate attire is often overshadowed by the more immediate needs of shelter and food. Yet, the importance of having clean and presentable clothing cannot be overstated in its impact on an individual’s self-esteem, mental health, and their ability to access opportunities. As one of OJCF’s Impact Together nonprofits, Community Partners for Affordable Housing (CPAH) integrates permanent supportive housing into the communities they serve. In 2023, CPAH opened The Joyce - a housing community for people exiting homelessness. CPAH’s housing serves those who are low income, and at The Joyce, the rents are set for people with very low or no income. Some CPAH residents have a history of housing instability, but at The Joyce, all residents have a history of homelessness. Therefore, CPAH both prevents and directly addresses homelessness through their housing programs and services. You learn compassion and empathy in the hospitals and you learn it on the streets in mixed working class - middle class communities and suburbs, and even downtown. You chat with a number of them, you know their name, they know yours. You give them some money, whatever you can spare. People in these communities work hard for a living, they are very down to earth chatting with you just as you are chatting with them. It saddens you that women come up outside the supermarkets and ask you for money. You help them. These are not wealthy neighbourhoods. The panhandlers you talk with don't talk about feelings and emotions, but they thank you for the handout., and tell you 'God bless you'. This article says that they don't show emotion, and that is true. Life on the street, you understand it. You see homeless people lining up downtown for the social charity organizations that come in trucks bring big boxes and plastic bags of winter clothes, sweaters, blankets. So when you see an article like this about eliminating or reducing homelessness, of course you read it.

Homelessness can often result from unexpected events like medical emergencies or family crises. We must shift our perspective and recognize that homelessness can affect anyone, even those we consider our peers or colleagues. 💡 How can we, as professionals, help make a difference?
