Over the last year I’ve been facilitating Women in Design discussions every other Friday at KD. It’s a safe space to discuss a variety of topics, share thoughts or just listen in. I wanted to help give female designers the chance to talk about subjects that they perhaps either consciously or subconsciously don’t talk about with the wider team. Here’s three takeaways that we’ve all learnt: 1. There is nearly always someone else thinking or feeling the same as you. 2. Wherever you are in your career there will be topics you’ve not thought about before, or experiences you’ve not yet had, which you can learn about from others and feel more prepared for. 3. It’s empowering having conversations with other female designers and hearing their experiences. I’m pleased to say we’re going to keep it up as a group and see how we can get more involved. I also do acknowledge that we are lucky to have a group of female designers at Kinneir Dufort to talk openly with. Let’s keep pushing for this in the industry. #womenindesign #productdesign #industrialdesign

🙌It's Tuesday, and I may look completely fine, but honestly, I can't remember any of my passwords. 😲 Here's hoping everyone had a great holiday weekend! I had an opportunity to visit the exhibit at the Met, 'Women Dressing Women', the first time the museum has solely dedicated an exhibit to the work of women. (it's about time!) 👉The exhibit displays a lineage of over 70 female fashion designers from 1910 to present day, showing how fashion became a tool (not only for creativity and self-expression), but also for economic freedom and independence. A few takeaways: ✅In the words of Anifa Mvueumba, "When I stopped trying to fit into an industry that unfortunately wasn't ready to embrace me, I quickly began to see milestones of success". A statement we can all relate to. ✅By the start of the nineteenth century, the guild system was abolished, and the appeal of fashion as one of the few trades available to women catalyzed a rise in female dressmakers and seamstresses in the US. ✅Women designers worked to free females from restrictive corsets so they could move as effortlessly as their male counterparts. ✅In the 1960s and 1970s, designers such as Betsey Johnson, Vivienne Westwood, and Sonia Rykiel, combined their work with progressive creative, social, and political ideas. If you wear clothes, this is definitely worth a visit! - Exhibit runs through March 3rd - interestingly the original launch was set for 2020 - to coincide with 100 years of women's suffrage in the US - delayed by COVID. 👋Fashion clearly enabled female empowerment. Let's hope this exhibit will encourage us to continue to recognize (and celebrate!) - not only women fashion leaders - but women leaders across all industries. #womeninbusiness #womensupportingwomen #ebcassociates #erudites
