Every now and then I get asked by a hiring manager struggling to fill a vacancy “how many [insert whichever discipline] engineers do you currently have on your books?” But is this the right question to ask? Whether it’s 0, 1, 50 or 100 engineers “on the books”, a more important question to ask is “what’s your approach to finding candidates that align from an experience, behavioural and cultural perspective?” After all, we could have 100 engineers “on the books”, but if none of them align to the role and organisation, that number is hardly relevant. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 On Friday, one of my PMP candidates who is transitioning from a discipline engineer to Project Engineering asked me what sorts of questions he'd expect at an interview (he has an interview coming up this week and I often help my PMP candidates prepare for interviews). Here is a cleaned-up summary of questions we discussed. 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚-𝘽𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 🟪 Can you describe a project you have worked on, and what your responsibilities were? 🟪 Can you share an example where you had to resolve a complex engineering problem? 🟪 How have you managed conflicts within your project team before? 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 🟪 How familiar are you with any softwares or tool that our company makes use of? 🟪 Describe your understanding of the project lifecycle? 🟪 Can you explain how you would manage risks in project delivery? 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 🟪 How do you typically manage communication within your project team to ensure that everyone is on the same page? 🟪 Could you please provide an example of when you led a team under difficult circumstances? How to make your engineering resume stand out. I get a lot of students asking how to optimise their CV, make it stand out. You need to craft your backstory, engage the reader, lead them in with your summary or career highlights. But then, the key is to use engineering metrics, project scale, and common TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms), to show the impact you made, your achievements, or value you brought, and make the experience locally relevant, regardless of where it was. It's all about the lingo. And quantitative data, units and metrics provide real factual information to the reader. Examples: - profit increased by 13% - $1.4B project - 250,000 sqm GFA - 4x215kW pump units - 3,000 lot residential subdivision - 4km pipeline - 250 hotel room development Think quantum, length, cost, program, specs, data. Weave project metrics throughout your CV. Then take these and work them into a noteworthy statement. Worked on a $1.4B project in the EPC team, fast tracking the program, By 14 weeks, From the implementation of a new software I was part of developing. I worked on a 3,000 lot subdivision, managing 35 projects with a team of 8 project managers, with a project value of over $1B. Improved quality of 'the product' by creating a new ITP that was incorporated into the companys QMS.
