GOOD NEWS ALERT!! The White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research was just announced and it’s a major step forward in the fight to improve and prioritize women’s healthcare! Historically, research and funding for women’s healthcare has been dismal and it leaves women vulnerable to be misdiagnosed, mistreated, and misunderstood in medical settings. This is a promising step towards making sure women’s health is seen as equally as important as men’s and gender inequality in healthcare can FINALLY come to an end 💛

White House launches initiative to boost women’s health research The Biden administration has announced the first-ever White House initiative on women’s health research in an effort to drive innovation and close research gaps. Despite making up more than half of the US population, women remain understudied and underrepresented in health research. This underrepresentation can lead to big gaps in research and limit our understanding of conditions that are specific to women. The new White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research is led by First Lady Jill Biden and the White House Gender Policy Council. President Joe Biden said he’s long been a believer in the ‘power of research’ to help save lives and get high-quality health care to the people who need it. The 10-year Women's Health Strategy is a pivotal step, acknowledging the need for tailored care and addressing inequities faced by diverse communities of women. The government's commitment to fund women's health hubs, tackle health disparities, and appoint Women's Health Ambassadors signals a promising shift towards inclusivity. Investments in breast cancer screening units and the appointment of a Menopause Employment Champion and Women's Health Champion highlight the ongoing efforts to ensure women's health is a priority. Let's continue to embrace equity and work towards a future where healthcare truly meets the needs of all women. #WomensHealth #WomensHealthProfessionalCare

Women on average live longer than men, yet studies have found that women spend a greater portion of their lives in ill health, make fewer visits to the GP, receive less health monitoring, and take more potentially harmful medication. Read our article 'Women’s health in focus: Closing the UK gender health gap' on the ITN Business Hub to learn more about the importance of education and awareness around women’s health issues, and what's being done to help close the gender health gap — and ultimately support women in their physical health: https://lnkd.in/eC2SDt3e Our upcoming programme 'Women’s Health: The Future We Deserve' explores similar topics and will be launching for #InternationalWomensDay2024. #GenderHealthGap #WomensHealth #Article #IWD2024

There remains substantial gaps in data and evidence base about conditions that only affect women. These issues aren't not alien to the occupational context as seen with the scarce scientific evidence base on women’s reproductive and gynaecological health and work or occupational risks affecting older female workers, young female workers, young mothers and women from ethnic minorities. Greater understanding of how women’s health affects their experience in the workplace remains a challenge that requires effective management and prioritisation though government, public policy efforts and within workplaces. It is for this reason that the first-ever White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research announced by president Biden is welcomed. https://lnkd.in/eC7-pjAt The initiative led by First Lady Jill Biden, the White House Gender Policy Council and Carolyn M. Mazure will look at closing research gaps as well as delivering concrete recommendations to advance women’s health research. If you want to know more about the importance of gender-responsive occupational safety and health see IOSH's written submission to the UK's 2022 Women’s Health Strategy https://lnkd.in/e9cg9bkt and our calls for a gender inclusive mindset in policy and legislation. #totalworkerhealth #occupationalsafetyandhealth #womenshealth #gendersensitivelegislation #gendermainstreaming #reproductivehealth #occupationalhealth #publicpolicy #genderequity #policyadvocacy #genderinclusion

📔📕Recent research has highlighted that women will spend 25% of their lives with debilitating conditions and that there is a persistent data gap showing an underdiagnosis for certain health conditions in women compared to men. This republished report by the World Economic Forum and the McKinsey Health Institute makes for sobering reading. https://ow.ly/STwc50QVrrE 🚨 75 million years of women's lives lost due to the health gap. 📅 Or an average of 500 days for each woman. 💸Only 1 percent of health investments in female-specific conditions beyond oncology. For example: 📌8 out of 10 women are not diagnosed for the menopause 📌6 out of 10 are not diagnosed for endometriosis Researchers think some of the causes are driven by systemic gender bias in medicine. Caroline Criado Perez, author of 'Invisible Women' which has exposed the gender bias in medical care, says "For millennia, medicine has functioned on the assumption that male bodies can represent humanity as a whole. As a result, we have a huge historical data gap when it comes to female bodies. Women are dying, and the medical world is complicit. It needs to wake up.” How can employers help? First of all by understanding the specific conditions that are underdiagnosed in women. Employers can also help by raising awareness about female-specific health conditions and symptoms and also by proactively promoting and enabling access to preventive health screening and checks on an annual basis as well as investing in programs that will support female health. The repercussions on society, communities and economies are significant. There are vast economic benefits to investing in women's health with an ROI ratio of 1:3 for every dollar invested. "Addressing the women’s health gap would boost the global economy by $1 trillion annually – a 1.7% increase in per capita GDP." The full report can be found here https://ow.ly/STwc50QVrrE . We are optimistic about the work that is being undertaken by the Global Health Alliance for Women's Health. SVEF has for several years been actively identifying partners and innovators that are making groundbreaking progress in the domain of women's health and we are proud to work with leading global employers who are investing in women's health and driving positive social change. https://ow.ly/Jig250QVrrB #WomensHealth #GenderHealthGap #GlobalAllianceWomensHealth

Interesting study that highlights some important topics for every woman. Women's health is a broad and diverse field that encompasses more than just reproductive health. It also covers health issues that are unique to women or that affect women differently or more severely than men. There is a large gap in the health outcomes, research, data, and care delivery for women, resulting in lower quality of life and economic potential for women. This gap could be narrowed by tackling the main sources of inequalities in science, data, and care delivery. Reducing the women’s health gap could have positive impacts on individual lives, society, and the global economy. It could increase the lifespan and well-being of millions of women, as well as potentially increase the global GDP by $1 trillion annually by 2040. From a business perspective, the study's conclusions are clear and evident: - Women's health offers many opportunities for innovation and investment throughout the value chain, from fundamental research to product development to care delivery. A gender-responsive and inclusive approach that considers the needs and preferences of women and girls could enhance these opportunities. - Women's health products and services have a large and expanding market, especially in areas that are now neglected or ignored, such as menopause, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, and maternal health. - There is also a demand for more accessible and affordable care for women, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where the women’s health gap is more pronounced. This could involve developing alternative models and systems of care delivery, such as telemedicine, mobile health, and women’s health hubs, that are tailored to women’s needs and preferences. - Gender-specific data and research are essential for developing and evaluating interventions that work well and safely for women. This requires using new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital health, to produce and examine data.
