Blaine Recovery Center has officially reached a milestone of restoring 5000 lives back to normal. Here’s what you probably don’t know: When Blaine Recovery Center first started back in 2004, they didn't have much of a track record. But just a few years later, they restored and set over 100 lives back on track. How did this happen? By harnessing the power of personal experience and professional expertise. Here’s the story: Blaine Recovery Center's story began in 2004, with a small team of dedicated professionals. Unexpectedly, the founder was a recovering addict himself. While there, he wasn’t even trying to create a full-fledged recovery center. For a while, the Blaine team tried to find success doing small random steps to greatness: - Conducting community seminars - Offering free counselling - Organizing rehabilitation retreats Until one day, everything changed: A former addict shared his recovery journey. It was 2007, and Blaine Recovery Center became the first to implement a peer-based recovery program. They saw this as an opportunity—and took it. Their gameplan: - Empowering recovered addicts to guide others - Providing a structured environment for recovery - Offering support beyond just medical treatment As you can probably guess, it worked!!! By 2010, Blaine Recovery Center had risen to a high level of success—way beyond what they probably ever set out to do. - Over 500 lives restored - Community recognition and awards - Expansion into multiple locations And the rest is history: We should all appreciate this story, for its perfect encapsulation of what it takes to achieve recovery, but also shows how in order to be “lucky,” you need prepare, open up to position yourself for when opportunity arises. How family members have adopted holistic recovery for themselves that has changed the health and well-being of the entire family. How many weeks! When is now a good time to start? When I first heard we each have 4000 weeks to live I very predictably thought how long is that? Coming up with approximately 78 years I then stumbled into the thought of how many weeks have I got left. The most important question is however.....  what am I going to do with the weeks I have left? I now have my 101 things to do before I die. The film starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman depics two men who are terminally ill, they become unlikely friends and escape the cancer ward and start to fulfill their personal "bucket lists", hence the name of the film and defines the principle of what do you want to do before you "kick the bucket" It is reported that when surveys are done in any Hospice, the residents never say "I wish I had spent more time in the office". More time with my family, my hobbies, making a difference, traveling, playing a musical instrument and experiences all did appear regularly. What you have been putting off doing, so many of the things on the hospice lists are not things that take much money. So my advice...... Get past the inertia.... And ask "when is NOW a good time to start?" Get you notebook and start your "bucket list" Where do you want to go? who do you want to meet? what experiences do you want? what do you want to see? what do want to try? what feelings do you want to experience? get your headings and start detailing what will play a very important part in however many weeks you have left. Have you been on a roller coaster of emotions while facing end of life for you or a loved one? Well, you are not alone. It is NORMAL for people to be anxious about dying. In my 30 years in healthcare, I have had the privilege of being with many in their final weeks, days, minutes and at the moment of death. What I have learned is that every day you live, you have made choices for the life you experienced. As your days draw to a close, those choices play out (some good, some not so good), but your acceptance of the life you have chosen becomes your passport to your death. Anxiety has cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and physical manifestations that range from mild to severe. Identifying Anxiety and utilizing proper tool(s) are skills your hospice team offer. Enrolling in hospice sooner than the final couple of weeks, allows the hospice team to learn more about the person so that "life choices" and the weight that it brings can be addressed which may lesson anxiety.

Support for Alzheimers Society “Spurred” on by a great result at The Bridge last night, back up the Downs early this morning for an eight mile walk. I am now midway through my two-week preparation for the Trek26 Stonehenge, 26 mile walk in support of the Alzheimers Society. Special for me as the anniversary of my fathers’ passing but what have I learnt over the last week? ·     On occasion, I maybe susceptible to hearing what I want to hear (not a unique characteristic, I know), including when my body says “but it hurts”. However, when you push through those initial pain barriers, capability and productivity is increased. ·     Routine exercise makes me more focused at my work. My mind becomes ultra-creative during exercise, generating thoughts and ideas for action once the recovery is complete and I’m back supporting my employment. ·     The work performed by the Alzheimers Society in supporting patients, families and valuable dementia research. For most respectable people, this is a great reason alone to donate. There exists a small cohort who are openly donating purely because of my pain on the day. Whatever, weirdo’s. ·     That Cucurella is a real player, ask the Spurs attack last night. A massive thank you for the donations received to date.
