Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) remains one of the most profound yet under recognized challenges faced by veterans and active military personnel today. The account of Ryan Larkin, a 29-year-old Navy SEAL, sheds light on this issue. Despite his physical prowess, Ryan struggled with the invisible wounds of war, believing that repeated exposure to blast waves had irreparably damaged his brain. What is your thought regarding repeated #concussive #brain #injury? Should military members be concerned about the Department of Defense position that brain injury is primarily limited to road side expolsions and combat fire? Probably not. The military identified approximately 14 weapons that cause concussive forces. What is the proper way to handle the known risks, especially for military members? Of course, nobody will be able to prove that concussive brain injury caused the Maine shooting, but more likely than not prior behavior and peer reports should have provided guidance.

In the latest special edition of the JMVFH - The Journal of Military, Veteran and Family Health I explore special considerations in psychedelics and psychedelic-assisted therapies for Veterans. I review what are psychedelics, explore safety considerations, examine MDMA for PTSD, discuss moral injury, and the call for development of a coordinated framework for new publicly-funded psychedelics research with Veterans. "Veterans Affairs Canada can be considered an ideal setting for research translation across the research, practice, and policy continuum. Research translation in this area is best guided by processes of stakeholder involvement, implementation science methods, and funding along the whole continuum of research, development, and evaluation... Service related musculoskeletal disorders comprise diverse conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissues. These disorders may result in pain and loss of function and are among the most disabling and costly conditions in the UK. The transition from military service to civilian life is a challenging journey for many veterans, especially those grappling with service-related muscular and skeletal injuries. In the United Kingdom, a significant number of military veterans face not only the physical consequences of their injuries but also the profound psychological impact that often leads to feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, and isolation.

The tragedy in Lewiston has brought to light the severe consequences of repeated exposure to explosive blasts, particularly for those working long term as instructors in the military, and the effort we need to make to protect them. The attacker, who suffered catastrophic brain damage, was affected by his years of exposure to detonations. This is definitely known after a post-mortem study was conducted on his brain with the permission of his family. This situation underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive review and reform of training protocols involving explosives, artillery, and rocket launchers in military settings. Detailed examination reveals extensive neurological damage, including axonal degeneration, loss of myelin, inflammation, and vascular injury within the brain. It is imperative that we advocate for enhanced safety measures, including the development of advanced blast-protective gear and the implementation of a rotational system to limit individual exposure to explosive forces. This is about safeguarding safeguarding valued instructors brains. I'm asking people to mobilize in healthcare, military, scientific research, and veterans' affairs to push for necessary changes in recognizing the serious need for change here.
