Social Value is a broader understanding of value.   It moves beyond using money as the main indicator of value, instead putting the emphasis on engaging people to understand the impact of decisions on their lives. "Transforming Lives, One Dream at a Time" We recently partnered with HammondCare, highlighting the incredible impact of The Dreams Project within their palliative care unit. Each year around 60,000 Australians receive life-changing palliative care, with a majority experiencing significant relief from pain and distress. Yet, the demand for these services is rapidly growing, stretching our healthcare system. HammondCare's Dreams Project steps in here, granting heartfelt wishes to end-of-life patients, funded solely by generous donations. Our task was to capture the essence of this beautiful initiative. We crafted a deeply moving video, bringing to light the profound difference each dream makes. This video isn't just a showcase; it's a call to action. It's designed to inspire and encourage benefactors and donors to support this vital cause. Our production aimed to stir emotions and motivate action, and we believe it does just that. This year, I'm fundraising for the EDUCATION & HEALTH of children in Colombia and Honduras. This campaign is focused on young orphan children at risk of under-nutrition, physical abuse and lack of education, factors that make them very vulnerable to children trafficking and social exclusion. Today, there are over 1,600,000 orphan children in Latin America. Even with a small donation, you can have a positive impact! It takes $39 a month to change the life of one of these children in Colombia or Honduras — roughly $500 per year. What a great way to start a wet and windy Tuesday. Many thanks to the The King's Fund for another thought provoking discussion - this time on hospital discharge. Sally Warren steered us magnificently, starting with Simon Bottery's reflections on the research the King's Fund has undertaken, and then views from Becky Wilkinson, Matthew Kershaw and Jose Luis Fernandez bringing the perspectives of local government, health and academia. Simon shared that even when systems say there is a high level of collaboration and integration, there is still a lack of alignment on the barriers to discharge and causes of delay. Becky talked about the critical importance of a single set of metrics that determine success, and being granular in determining patient groups and their needs. From Matthew's perspective, working well together needs to deliver better outcomes, and establishing a fully integrated team across health and social care so there is a single set of priorities has been critical for his system, together with models of care that support people to be looked after outside the hospital. Jose's reminders that a rapid discharge isn't always a good discharge, and that putting people into the wrong setting for their needs to speed the process can cost more if it hinders re-ablement, were timely reminders that when we talk about discharges we need to remember it's about people. The subsequent conversation covered the challenges faced by particular groups such as the homeless and those with a mental health need, and how systems manage risk effectively. The take-homes for me? A common, data driven understanding that all parties recognise and acts as a basis for aligned action; taking the long term view even in the face of short term funding; building mutual trust and flexibility, and above all remaining centred on what is best for the patient. I'm sure this conversation will continue, and I look forward to being part of it as CF continues to work with systems and teams on their toughest problems.
