The Shaken Baby Alliance is delighted to be a grantee of the Toyota Way Forward Fund, a transformative initiative committed to enhancing access to care and injury recovery support for individuals and families, initially focusing on children with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). This significant grant empowers The Shaken Baby Alliance to advance and further investigate our groundbreaking C.O.P.E. child abuse prevention program. C.O.P.E. (Crying. Overwhelmed. Pause. Exit.) stands as an easily memorizable acronym designed to guide both current and future caregivers through secure steps to de-escalate stressful caregiving situations. Rooted in evidence-informed data, C.O.P.E. is a culturally inclusive program taught in both English and Spanish, leveraging the research by Dias et al., which demonstrated a remarkable 47% reduction in SBS/AHT incidence. This innovative program offers structured education covering crucial aspects such as infant crying patterns, the risks of violent shaking, effective ways to cope with infant crying, and more. Participants actively engage in creating a personalized crying plan and commit to a letter of promise, fostering a community dedicated to preventing child physical abuse. Last week, the Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh's Staff and Board of Directors met with the Down Syndrome Center of Western PA's Staff presenting them with a monetary donation. As the founding organization of the DSC here in Western PA back in 1989, DSAP has been and continues to be committed to ensuring that individuals with Down syndrome from birth to adulthood receive specialized medical care and support through the pediatric and adult Down Syndrome Center of Western PA. Without this support: Pediatric and Adult Care Coordinators would not exist, free prenatal visits would not happen, visit length would be 15 minutes instead of 60 minutes, visits to help pediatric patients and their families transition to adult care would be 15 minutes instead of up to two hours, behavioral health visits (virtual or in-person) with a practitioner experienced in Down syndrome and dual diagnoses of autism would not happen, the nurse who families see in clinic may not be the same each time and would not have experience with Down syndrome, the Center would not be able to employ an adult with Down syndrome, training medical school students, pediatric residents and genetic counselors about caring for people with Down syndrome would not happen in Pittsburgh, and research focused on regression in patients with Down syndrome or the study of nutrition services/fitness programs would be undercut. Thank you Prof. Maryam for sharing this interesting article titled "Essential Package of Palliative Care for Iranian Children". It outlines the need for a comprehensive palliative care package aimed at enhancing the quality of life for children with cancer in Iran. Based on a study that reviewed literature and consulted experts, it proposes a package focused on both the technical and human elements of care—ranging from medicine and equipment to spiritual support and symptom management. The significance of this study lies in its culturally tailored approach to care. The twofold approach of addressing both the physical and emotional well-being of the child shows a holistic understanding of pediatric care. This essential care package can serve as a critical tool for integrating palliative care into Iran's primary healthcare system, particularly for children with life-threatening conditions like cancer. It's a strong step forward in making compassionate and comprehensive care available to those who need it the most. I congratulate Prof. Maryam and colleagues for this interesting research on a topic where the author have a great experience.

Stroke care only reaching half of Scots patients Only half of the more than 10,000 Scots who had a stroke last year received the quality of care and treatment they are entitled to, according to new figures. New figures published today by Public Health Scotland show Scotland is falling significantly behind its targets of 80% of patients getting access to the stroke care bundle. Just 51.3% of the 10,803 people in Scotland who had a stroke in 2023 accessed a stroke unit within one day, received brain imaging, received aspirin if they needed it and were offered a swallow screening to check they were able to eat and drink safely. Two major stroke charities are now calling for greater investment in Scotland’s NHS and stroke services. Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) said years of failure in achieving stroke care targets should be a wakeup call to the Scottish government. One June 29, from 2 pm – 4 pm in Hamel, Minnesota, we are hosting an open-house style launch party! It’s so awesome that we will be getting together to celebrate William’s legacy with some snacks and sweets with you all. The part that we, at William’s Wardrobe are most excited about is getting the opportunity to share what we are doing to support the cardiac community in the ICU. We’re so excited that we wanted to share our goals for the launch party with you all today! As a reminder, before we jump into the specifics of our goals for June 29 and the month of July, our commitment as an organization is to support heart babies, heart families, and the staff on the CVICU/PICU floor. We are also committed to contributing funds to CHD research. Our venture in all of this will start with the community at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis with our first delivery of wardrobes, care packages, and funds for research being on October 1, 2024. As a team, we have spent a lot of time and energy creating the goals below and are passionate about them. We know these goals will bring love and light to those in the desperate fight against CHD. #1- Initial Impact Goal: Our initial impact goal is to raise $17,000, enough funds to provide the first four months of delivering impact for the cardiac community (October 1, 2024- January 1, 2025). This impact will include the following: - Wardrobes (infant robes and socks) to every single heart baby being cared for at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in the CVICU for the first four months. - Hand-packed care packages for each heart family supporting patients being cared for on the unit for the first four months. - Four months of team building, engagement, and recognition for the M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital CVICU/PICU staff via William’s Wardrobe staff fund at the hospital. - $2,000 total contributed to CHD research. #2- Sustainable Impact Delivery Goal: With our sustainable impact delivery goal, we are aiming to establish $3,350 in monthly recurring support. This monthly incoming support will ensure sustainable monthly impact for the cardiac community and more specifically: - Wardrobes to every single heart baby admitted in the CVICU monthly. - Hand-packed care packages for each heart family caring for a patient admitted in the CVICU monthly. - Monthly contribution to the staff fund for team building, engagement, and recognition of the incredible and hard-working heart staff. - $250 monthly contributions to CHD research   At our launch party and for the month of July, we are celebrating that we get the opportunity to give back to the families experiencing the ICU like William, Stephany, and Alex did and to the people that gave so much to William. Storytelling is POWERFUL medicine. Nurses often stuff their daily #stories into their subconscious, technically "the closet." I remember when I was married and I would come home and tell my husband stories from a Pediatric ICU. It was very early on into our marriage that he told me to "stop telling stories," about my evenings at work. I then would just sit in the bathtub and cry after my shifts. He didn't approve of that either, but I just needed an outlet from all the stress that was going on in my nervous system. Of course our relationship didn't last very long. Nurses need a healthy & safe outlet to tell their stories. To empty the subconscious of all the blocks and burdens causing stress due to #traumatic situations experienced at work and also in our daily life. Shamans call this #journeying through your #story in order to find the pieces of your soul that my be lost or entangled in something that keeps haunting the subconscious and showing up in your reality. I remember working with Anna and journeying through her story to help her tell her story on stage in front of an audience so that she could gain her power back.
