Are You Maximizing the YouTube A/B Thumbnail Feature? 🤔
YouTube recently introduced A/B Thumbnail testing for all channels, allowing up to three thumbnail changes at a given time to optimize content performance. At TBNR, we've explored this feature across our channels to maximize clicks for new videos through a multi-step approach.
This is the method we have adopted ⤵
1️⃣ Start with your Initial Upload Test: Upon initial upload, test 3 very different visual thumbnail concepts to identify the most engaging option for watch time.
2️⃣ Variation Testing: Within hours, we identify the best-performing thumbnail and make subtle changes to elements like objects, text, color, and facial expressions.
3️⃣ Audience Segmentation: After 3 days, test again as the audience shifts to more casual viewers. Previous winners may not perform as well with this group, potentially pushing for a fresh round of testing.
4️⃣ Extended Testing: Conduct additional tests at 7 and 30 days post-release to cater to viewers less familiar with your channel, aiming to maximize engagement with different thumbnails.
This has been an effective method TBNR and one that we will continue to tweak over time for the best results. While we have found a timing that seems to work for the next round of thumbnail testing, there are still some key things to consider such as:
⏩ A/B Testing evaluates both click-through rate (CTR) and average view duration (AVD) for effectiveness
⏩ Success isn't solely about high CTR; it's about finding a thumbnail that keeps viewers engaged
⏩ Embrace adjustments focusing first on major visual changes, then refining details like facial expressions and text
Overall, A/B Thumbnail testing on YouTube offers creators valuable insights into audience preferences, encouraging experimentation. While this effort can also be labor intensive with an ask to have multiple thumbnails ready, it is allowing creators to find the ultimate way to stand out for visibility
