Folks in #innovation have gotten a really bad rep for working on blue sky ideas and innovation theatre in recent years. I too was once part of the innovation unit of a major global insurer and I have seen the failings of internal corporate innovation. Yet, innovation is indespensible to any organisation seeking sustainable mid to long term growth. Even incremental innovation in product, services or process with little transformation efforts can make a positive difference. There seems to be a few missing pieces in innovation between business strategy and tactical execution as management teams consider the pros and cons of open, closed or hybrid innovation models. Three big parts seem to be shaping a more innovative culture internally, aligning middle management and building capabilities within the ecosystem. We're very grateful for the opportunities to explore these problems and have our new joinee Samira Suffian (based in KL) work with us as a senior consultant on this. Why is innovation such an important topic even today? When the entire economy goes with cost cutting exercises and tighten control measures, surely someone wise enough in management would be raring to drive future sustainable growth and build new competitive moats.
