🚴♀️ New Urban Bikeway Design Guide alert! 🚴♀️ Nearly 15 years ago, a small group of city transportation officials wrote the first Urban Bikeway Design Guide and changed the paradigm for how to build bikeways in U.S. cities. Today's guide - the third edition - continues to set the standard for urban bikeway design. The new guide is an important leap forward: we focus on planning and design goals that better serve people of all ages, abilities, and identities; we integrate a broader range of bikeway users, like people on cargo bikes, e-bikes, and scooters; and we map out how to plan and implement a bike network that centers equity and access at every step of the process. Oh...and the guide looks absolutely beautiful, too! Many, many people (NACTO staff past and present, NACTO member city staff past and present, design experts, advocates, researchers, thought leaders, and more) contributed to making this a fantastic resource, and I'm proud that I got to be a part of that team. Now go get yours! https://lnkd.in/e8NMuptZ
It's here! The moment we’ve all been waiting for–for over a decade–has finally arrived! Today, NACTO and Island Press published the third edition of the Urban Bikeway Design Guide. “We commend NACTO for their work with local planners and designers to build safer streets and more connected bikeway networks,” says U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. “The newest edition of the Urban Bikeway Design Guide will be an important resource for communities as they improve safety and design for cyclists, pedestrians, and everyone who uses our streets and roads.” Purchase the book from Island Press and use discount code UBDG3 to get 20% off! https://lnkd.in/ehMBRqBJ

A BIG shoutout to our fab five sprinters who will showcase our finished 'product', to revolutionise offsite build for NWG (Northumbrian Water Group)! For the water industry, offsite build is that thing you know you should be doing, you know you want to be doing ... but never quite get around to. 💪It's the gym class you've been meaning to go to. 🍅It's the healthy meals you've been wanting to cook. 🚲It's the bike you want to take more (and the car you're trying to drive less). ➡️You have clear evidence *why* you should be doing it, and you're well aware of the benefits it will bring... but somehow, something always gets in the way. Today Helen McAll, Callum Hanson, Pete Forbes, Jonathan Shaw and Phil Willcox will be sharing their strategy for how NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) can get that stuff out of the way. Their plan will rapidly accelerate and scale the use of offsite build across Northumbrian Water, to make projects cheaper, greener, faster and more efficient. 💖Thanks to everyone who jumped feet-first into our sprint this week - you've contributed to the brilliant final concept that we've got today.

Your driveway goes right up to your house, so it's important to manage the water flow on it to keep water away from your foundation. A paving expert knows how to slope your driveway so the water runs smoothly away without causing damage. #paving #asphaltpaving #asphalt #driveway #driveways #parkinglot #parkinglots

So often bike lanes are thought about and designed with what I call “applied car thinking”. Planners and politicians might have the best of intentions, but frame the issue in terms of car infrastructure – congestion, efficiency, counts. Even safety is largely a car-centric issue – cars are the main thing that make biking unsafe, and most “bicycle infrastructure” is really just car mitigation infrastructure. Vision Zero is so important but I think we get confused about it being the goal. Safety is table stakes, it is necessary but not enough! The true goal should be to maximize human flourishing- community, connection, happiness, health. To me the right question (to which the answer is usually “No”) is “Will this bike lane increase joy?”
Lots of great quotes to pull from this story, but I have to go with one from our guest of honor at a happy hour in Denver last night ... ! As David Zipper, a senior fellow with MIT Mobility Initiative, put it, “Bicyclists are an indicator species for general street safety (among drivers, pedestrians, etc). If you see lots of people cycling, city streets are probably safe. If not, you've got a problem.” https://lnkd.in/gY9j_GF3
