"Small unified steps forward on decarbonization, the clean energy transition, and other issues will help us reach environmental targets faster" Kelvey Vander Hart writes on our blog: https://hubs.la/Q02TDtMY0

A report from late last year makes the case that emissions have already peaked, and while their analysis may be very optimistic, we can’t deny that momentum is on our side when it comes to clean energy investment and growth. Independent of government, now we must look at permanent funding solutions like an infrastructure bank that can continue to fund green infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and clean energy. https://lnkd.in/gtFEha2Z

It’s going to be expensive to reach net zero, with investment needed in energy infrastructure, transport, industry and retrofitting of buildings.

On #WorldEnvironmentDay UNRISD reminds us the importance of a #just and #inclusive energy transition. Re-live the latest webinar help in occasion of #COP28 where we introduced a common framework for assessing Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) performance on justice and the energy transition. 🌱⚡️
Watch 🟢 Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) promised to deliver quickly and effectively on just energy transitions in a select few developing countries. However, forged among a small group of partners outside the multilateral climate policy space, it is not yet clear how ambitious, just and inclusive they are. This webinar introduces a common framework for assessing JETPs performance on justice and the energy transition. Speakers — Anabella Rosemberg Senior Advisor on Just Transition for the Climate Action Network International — Srestha Banerjee Director of the India Just Transition Centre at International Forum for Environment, Sustainability & Technology (iFOREST) — David Boys PSI - Public Services International Deputy General Secretary — Tetet Nera-Lauron Advisor for the United Nations Programme, Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung (Moderator) #WorldEnvironmentDay

Statement on Governor Shapiro's announcement of the Pennsylvania Reliability and Sustainability Standard (PRESS) and the Pennsylvania Climate Emissions Reduction (PACER): The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is encouraged by Governor Shapiro's announcement of two new energy policy proposals for Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is a leading electricity producer, the largest power exporter in the U.S., and a leading source of the emissions that cause climate change. Our commonwealth must take aggressive steps to cap and reduce our emissions. PACER and PRESS provide options to achieve those aims. The proposed revision to our now antiquated and uncompetitive portfolio standard through PRESS presents a promising pathway for reducing carbon emissions while providing Pennsylvanians the opportunity to have a prosperous, clean energy future. By including a more comprehensive range of clean energy technologies in PRESS — such as advanced nuclear — we can create more opportunities to balance the urgent need for rapid deployment of carbon-free energy with the need to protect and conserve Pennsylvania's resilient landscapes for nature and people. The Nature Conservancy has long supported our commonwealth's participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) as a proven and effective vehicle for capping and reducing emissions and making targeted investments in energy communities in Pennsylvania. Yesterday’s announcement of the PACER proposal presents another market-based option to cap and reduce Pennsylvania's significant power-sector emissions while investing in jobs and families. We encourage stakeholders and the Pennsylvania General Assembly to work together to implement policy to cap our power sector emissions. We echo Governor Shapiro, labor leaders, and climate advocates: Doing nothing is not an option.

Can nature-based solutions help combat climate change? Last month, scientists from the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed global warming exceeded 1.5C across the entire year for the first time, crossing a critical barrier into temperatures never experienced before by human civilisations. This ominous milestone doesn't yet signal the point of no return for the landmark Paris agreement, but it does bring the world ever closer and we should be under no illusions about the threats already posed to coral reefs and the Arctic sea ice. Urgent action to cut carbon emissions can still slow warming, scientists say, but future rises will depend on our ability to act and the levers we can pull — so why the reticence around investing in nature-based solutions? Planting trees in coastal areas creates climate resilience and provides a habitat for fish, birds and other plants supporting biodiversity. Decreasing deforestation is another way to benefit from nature-based solutions while restoring native forest at the margins of rivers avoid landslides and can act as a carbon sink. In recent years, the use of nature itself to mitigate and adapt to climate change has gained momentum, but not without significant criticism. Some argue that the concept of nature as a tool reduces and obscures its inherent value. Others reject the term and warn that its vagueness leaves it open to deliberate misuse. Yet IPBES estimates that nature-based solutions can provide up to 37% of the mitigation needed until 2030 to achieve the targets of the Paris Agreement. In the third episode of our Reuters Plus Decarbonisation series, Nadira Tudor talks to Shell's global vice-president of nature-based solutions, Flora Ji, about the role carbon credits can play in the energy transition. Flora talks about two specific NBS projects Shell is currently supporting in Asia. I appreciate much of this remains contentious but it has to be valuable to hear the views and strategy driving one of the world's biggest energy providers. The European Union's Industrial Carbon Management Strategy, unveiled alongside the recommendation for a 2040 emissions target, represents a significant opportunity to breathe new life into CCUS initiatives. With a target of 50 million tonnes of annual CO2 storage capacity by 2030, the strategy underscores the EU's commitment to advancing carbon management technologies and achieving climate neutrality goals. #CarbonCapture #CCUS #EU #ClimateAction
