Most of the funding for hospices comes from their charitable activities. However, NHS funding makes a vital contribution. Unfortunately, UK government funding to hospices has declined in real terms. If hospices are unable to provide the care patients need, the NHS will pick up the whole cost as these patients will end up in NHS facilities instead of hospices, with the specialist care they can provide to patients and their families. The government can choose to pick up the total cost of end of life care, or they can continue to pick up a fraction of the costs by funding hospices properly. This is not the most difficult decision the government will have to make. #hospice #care
You can watch here an ITV News piece made earlier today at Michael Sobell House , part of Harlington Hospice. The report examines hospice funding challenges and captures the high quality of care and support offered to patients there. https://lnkd.in/eGkQ8RJK

Did you know that Children’s hospices rely on grants and charitable donations to provide vital services to children and their families - from play to medical care, to respite care and advocacy? Without services such as these provided to my family and our daughter, I don’t know how we would have coped during her short life. Community NHS support is a postcode lottery with long waiting lists, so the closure of a children’s hospice should worry everyone - even if you’re fortunate enough to never need one. What can you do? ✅ Support your local hospice by taking part in fundraisers, volunteering or donating. £40 provides an hour of nursing care ✅ Follow and support charities like Together for Short Lives, which further supports families of children with life-limiting conditions (for example, we were gifted a mini break to make memories and received the Butterfly Fund to assist with funeral costs) ✅ Write to your MP and sign petitions to ensure vital services aren’t lost and vulnerable children can live their lives with dignity and care.
Zoe's Place Baby Hospice, Liverpool 's decision to close at the end of 2024 is very difficult for the children and families who receive care from the hospice, the staff who tirelessly provide it and all those in the local community who support it. We know that this will have been a very challenging decision for Zoe’s Place’s trustees to make too. Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time. Together for Short Lives commits to working with professionals and services in Merseyside to help make sure that the children and families affected by this decision can access the palliative care they need, when and where they need it. VIDEO. You live in the hospital? 😳. Well, do you know of a better way to understand everything, well almost everything about hospitals? How they work, how they are run, what every machine and ward does, know a lot of the staff, a day in the life of a hospital. I lived in every single hospital my mother was in. I made some business sacrifices, but I was never going to leave her side, just too loyal and faithful a son. People think you are staff. When they announce that visiting hours are over, some hospitals tell you that you can stay, you sleep on the floor or a chair, some even give you a cot somewhere in the hospital or a private room overnight. Every hospital is different, some don't allow overnight stays, but a number of hospitals in Western Canada have a completely different philosophy and approach than hospitals in the rest of Canada, to patients' family members, friendliness to family members of patients' families, patients' family rooms and accommodation, or they find you a place to stay near to the hospital, some even have other buildings on hospital campus especially for patients' families to stay. You know a lot of things about hospitals, even different philosophies and operations. Click on the exit on the top right to access the video. You can learn so much about hospitals, if you really want to.

This post (link below) launches PCV's spring fundraising effort. Please support our vital work. We know from Vermont Department of Health data and from our own helpline experience, that the number of people who are considering or using medical aid in dying in Vermont has tripled over the past two years. This is not news about more people dying. This is news about a blossoming of choice. More people who might otherwise be entering a phase of fear, pain and trauma for themselves and their loved ones are free to step off that path and make a conscious choice about where, when, and with whom they will make their farewell. We think this note of gratitude sums it up well: “Thank you deeply for the quality & depth of the information on your website. Its clarity and palpable respect for life, patients and the challenge it is to die has provided comfort, hope, and peace. I can plan knowing freedom & options are possible.” With your support, our work is bringing the option of a graceful exit and peace of mind to ever more people. https://lnkd.in/eS_kSxhT

Experienced Chief Executive, Director, Trustee. North East Charity Leader of the Year (Oct 22). Asker of awkward questions, finder of simpler solutions, deliverer of real impact.
Whatever your views on the 5.5% NHS pay uplift, spare a thought for charitable hospices who are already struggling with just an average 30% NHS contribution to the specialist clinical services both the law and statutory guidance says should be fully funded. There will be difficult decisions ahead for many trustee boards and many leadership teams. We’ve been warning NHS commissioners about this for a very long time with little response in many places. Access to specialist palliative and end of life care isn’t just a legal right, it’s a moral responsibility. Avoiding difficult conversations isn’t leadership, it isn’t systems working, it isn’t collaborative and it hasn’t worked. Time for the new government to step in and show the lead. If hospices close and families experience loved ones dying in pain and distress they will know where to look for accountability. Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP #PalliativeCare #HospiceCare
