🌍 UK Engineering Firms Launch Reuse-Focused Collective Big news today! Six top UK engineering firms have come together to create The Engineers Reuse Collective, focusing on accelerating reuse in the built environment. This not-for-profit group aims to support the UK's construction industry in moving towards net zero carbon 🌱. The initiative is led by Andy Yates, a former director of Webb Yates Engineers. The founding members include Civic Engineers, Buro Happold, Elliott Wood, Heyne Tillett Steel, Webb Yates Engineers, and Whitby Wood, with support from the Institution of Structural Engineers. According to the UK Green Building Council, the built environment contributes about 25% of the UK's carbon emissions. Addressing this through reuse could make a significant impact on our carbon footprint. 🌍 Sustainability in Structural Engineering A big thank you to Pinnacle Consulting Engineers Ltd for an insightful CPD session on sustainability in structural engineering. We had the privilege of hearing from experts Dimitris Elliniadis, Stephen Southgate, and Andy Carson, who led a thought-provoking discussion on the life cycle of CO², embodied carbon calculations, and innovative methods for reducing CO² in steel and concrete. One key takeaway? Pinnacle’s commitment to “Net Zero from Stage Zero” – a powerful motto guiding their approach to sustainability from the very start. We also explored the efficient use of materials, the potential of low-carbon alternatives, and discussed how crucial it is for engineers to get involved from the early concept design stages and ensure early engagement with the client on setting the CO² targets from the get-go of a project. This helps materialise this more effectively. Once in RIBA stage 3, there is not much room for manoeuvre. Last week, our Engineer and Sustainability Lead, Arij Mroue, had the pleasure of attending the Net Zero Carbon Breakfast Panel hosted by Envision. The discussion emphasised the critical importance of early collaboration and involvement from designers and contractors in order to drive carbon reduction - something that is also a fundamental part to our Impact//Duty strategy at Jensen Hunt. It was great to see the upfront cost of carbon reduction discussed so openly across the panel alongside ways in which this can be overcome - something that the industry is yet to address. Another parallel between our strategy and the points raised was the importance of building a culture of incremental change across the work we do - rather than waiting for an opportunity for perfection. It was also inspiring to see the critical role of carbon reduction within the substructure and superstructure package of a project, further strengthening the argument that structural engineers must led the change within the industry for lower carbon design! #netzero #carbonreduction #futureofconstruction #impact #sustainableconstruction #sustainabledesign #structuralengineering
