Reflections in the Mirror: Confronting Our Inner Biases Upon peering into the mirror of my own mind, I was confronted not just with my reflection, but with the shadowy figures of bias that stood silently behind it. Answering the question, "Am I biased?" requires a mixture of introspection, humility, and courage. The truth is, everyone harbours biases, as they are an intrinsic part of the human cognitive apparatus. Our brains, striving for efficiency, use past experiences and cultural inputs to make quick judgments about the present. Unconscious bias is like that awkward relative who shows up uninvited to every family gathering. You don't remember sending the invite, but there they are, hogging the conversation and occasionally putting their foot in their mouth. We all like to think of ourselves as open-minded, but the truth is, our conditioned responses are inevitable due our socialisation and personal life experiences. Unconscious bias can manifest in numerous subtle ways. In social interactions, it might appear as a preference for people who share similar backgrounds or experiences, or discomfort around those who differ. In professional settings, it might influence hiring decisions, performance evaluations, and teamwork dynamics. For example, a manager might unknowingly favour candidates who went to the same university or come from a similar cultural background, believing these candidates 'fit better' with the company’s culture. We need to acknowledge and explore these biases. We need to question their origins, and find out how they might skew my view of a person or situation? The journey toward answering "Am I biased?" isn't about self-flagellation or guilt. Instead, it's about growth and learning to widen our perspectives. It involves actively seeking out diverse viewpoints, challenging our assumptions, and adjusting how we interact with the world. It’s about making a conscious effort to listen more, speak less, and be open to changing our minds based on new evidence or persuasive arguments. Confronting unconscious bias within oneself is not a sign of weakness but an act of courage and integrity. So, am I biased? Yes, I am. We all are. But the more pertinent question might be, "What am I doing about it?" Acknowledging our biases is the first step; actively working to mitigate their effects on our judgments and behaviours is where real change begins. Layers of Identity: Exploring the Rich Tapestry of Intersectionality In the rich mosaic of human experience, where myriad identities converge and diverge, lies the profound concept of intersectionality. Pioneered by Kimberlé Crenshaw, this lens compels us to recognize the layered realities that define each individual—where race, gender, class, and myriad other facets interlock in complex patterns, shaping each person’s journey. Intersectionality acknowledges the unique challenges at these intersections, uncovering the deeply embedded structures of power and privilege in our identities. At its core, intersectionality reveals the layered existence of identities, where race, gender, sexuality, and class are interwoven threads. It challenges the simplicity of single-issue analysis, advocating for a multifaceted approach that mirrors the complexities of life. Consider the experience of a Black woman navigating through society—her journey is marked not solely by her gender or race but by their confluence, creating a unique mosaic of challenges. Embracing an intersectional lens is transformative. It compels us to look beyond generic solutions, to tailor interventions that address the nuanced challenges faced by individuals at multiple identity intersections. This approach illuminates overlooked areas of privilege and oppression, ensuring no one is invisible. In practice, this means designing workplace policies that accommodate the realities of all employees, such as women of colour, youth, queer individuals, or those with disabilities. Intersectionality enriches our understanding and drives precise, effective actions, turning diversity work into a powerful engine for social change. For DEIB practitioners, the journey toward intersectional practice involves meticulous exploration and thoughtful action. It begins with robust analysis to unearth layered experiences within an organization. This insight paves the way for crafting targeted programs and policies—from recruitment strategies to support systems that address specific barriers. Further, nurturing an organizational culture that celebrates intersectionality is essential. Through workshops, discussions, and continuous learning, practitioners can cultivate an environment where every voice is heard and every identity recognized. This cultural shift ensures that intersectionality influences decisions and interactions at all levels, crafting a world that truly embraces the richness of human diversity.

Doing Human Better My, your and our challenge for 2024 and beyond As we enter a new year, it's important to take a moment to reflect on how we can improve as individuals, organisations, and collectives. The truth is, while we've accomplished incredible scientific and technological feats, we still struggle to connect with each other in respectful, inclusive, and harmonious ways.   Our society is plagued by self-centred behaviour, prejudice, bias, destructive emotions, and damaging relations. Gender-based violence, corruption, and the greed of the few versus the socio-economic strive of millions are just a few examples of the tragic tale of humanity's unravelling.   So, what would this world be like if we DID HUMAN BETTER? It's a challenge we must all take on, individually and collectively. Let's strive towards a future where we prioritise empathy, respect, and inclusivity. Only then can we truly achieve our full potential as a species.   In the pursuit of personal and collective growth, we invite you to join us on a journey towards integral consciousness. Our goal is to move beyond self-centred, profit-driven mindsets and embrace hope, respect, care, dignity, love, and empathy-based relations that enable us to foster environments aligned with the survival and flourishing of all sentient beings.    The journey towards doing human better calls for us to wake-up, grow-up, and clean-up, in order to show-up in a more mature and inclusive way.
