As someone deeply entrenched in the DoD cyber realm throughout my career, I can’t help but resonate with every point highlighted in the recent analysis on the United States Cyber Force by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. The discussion around the mismatch in commanding cyber warfare units, the dire need for a unified talent pipeline, and the proposed establishment of a U.S. Cyber Force strike a chord with the realities I’ve witnessed firsthand. The narrative is not just about recognizing the obstacles but about identifying actionable solutions to cultivate a formidable and dedicated cyber force. The establishment of a U.S. Cyber Force, as suggested, could redefine our approach, making cybersecurity a central element of our national defense strategy. It’s pivotal to acknowledge that many of us chose to serve in cyber roles driven by a deep belief in the mission’s importance, not for financial gain. However, the barriers and obstacles outlined in this article often become the reasons we reluctantly pivot to the civilian sector. It’s not the compensation that guides this transition but the pursuit of an environment where our skills can effectively contribute to national security without undue hindrance. I encourage my network to read this compelling piece and reflect on how we, as a community, can support and push for the necessary reforms. Let’s champion the creation of an environment where talented individuals are drawn to serve in cyber roles, not deterred by systemic hurdles. It’s time for a change, and it begins with us acknowledging the need for it. #CyberSecurity #DoD #NationalDefense #CyberForce #MissionDriven

Today's Two Minute Cyber Topic: Cyber Threat Intelligence Lifecycle and Tools/Platforms, May 1, 2024 🔄 CTI is not just a one-off process. It's a cyclical journey known as the Cyber Threat Intelligence Lifecycle. This cycle ensures that the intel gathered is pertinent and actionable. It involves multiple steps, starting from collection to dissemination. 📑 The lifecycle begins with requirement setting. Knowing what you're looking for is half the battle. Once the requirements are clear, raw intelligence is collected. This is where the various CTI sources play a significant role. 🔍 Analysis is the heart of this lifecycle. Raw data, on its own, isn't very useful. Analysts refine this data, identifying patterns and deducing implications. The outcome of this phase is actionable intelligence. 🖥️ As technology advances, a plethora of tools and platforms have emerged. They automate and streamline CTI processes. From data collection to visualization, these tools are invaluable. Platforms like MISP or ThreatConnect are increasingly popular in the CTI realm. 🧰 These tools speed up data gathering and enhance its accuracy. They can pull data from various sources, making the intel more comprehensive. Additionally, they assist in collaboration, allowing multiple teams to work on the same data set. 📢 Once the intelligence is ready, it's disseminated to the stakeholders. This could be your IT team, top management, or external partners. The goal is to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Knowledge is power, and in cybersecurity, it can be a shield against threats. Stay tuned for more in-depth knowledge on Cybersecurity this week. Today's Two-Minute Cyber Topic: Understanding the Telecom Landscape & Cyber Threats, April 8, 2024 (Late, sorry!) 🌐 Telecommunications is the backbone of our modern digital era. It bridges gaps, connects continents, and is ever-evolving. However, with growth comes vulnerabilities. The vast telecom landscape is rife with potential threats. 🔓 As technologies emerge, so do the techniques of cyber adversaries. Threats range from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks to eavesdropping. The rapid adoption of VoIP and cloud solutions further broadens this threat horizon. 📡 From traditional voice services to high-speed internet data transfer, each telecommunication layer is a potential point of cyber intrusion. Awareness of these layers and their vulnerabilities is crucial for providers and consumers. 🚫 The telecom sector, attracting billions in revenue, is a lucrative target for cybercriminals. Financial gain, corporate espionage, or mere disruption - their motives vary, but the result is often devastating. Engage with 'Two Minute Cyber' to stay updated. Cybersecurity is not just a technology challenge; it's about safeguarding our digital civilization. Be aware, and be safe! 💼🔐 Stay tuned for more in-depth knowledge on Cybersecurity this week. What are your thoughts on a Cyber Force? My thoughts are for Cyber Defense and Offensive Cyber they should immediately be in a Cyber Force that allows them to retain and recruit talent. The greyspace in this conversation is whether Service CSSPs/ DoDin operations also be absorbed into the Cyber Force Also the services will need a Cyber capability to defend their weapon systems/planes/ships/tanks etc. from cyber attacks. It’s not an easy answer however, as Cyber is a domain we are at war in already. We need a more focused approach of the Cyberwarfare immediately! #cyber #cyberforce #CyberCommand

Congressman Calls for Dedicated Cyber Force: "We're Not Equipped for This War" A House Representative and combat veteran warns of a critical gap in US cyber defenses. Here's the key messages: The Threat is Real: Cyberwar is happening now, with constant attacks from adversaries. We're Underequipped: Cyber forces are understaffed and underfunded (2025 budget request cut cyber funding by 15%). Fragmented Structure: Cyber personnel are scattered across the military, hindering efficiency. Time for a Change: A dedicated Cyber Force, similar to the Air Force or Space Force, is needed for focused development and talent acquisition. The Congressman argues that the current multi-service approach is failing and a unified Cyber Force is essential to address the growing cyber threats. He emphasizes the urgency of this issue, calling for immediate action in the National Defense Authorization Act. #cyberwarfare #uscyberdefense #cyberforce #militaryinnovation #nationaldefense

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies' recent report urging the creation of an independent military service dedicated to cyber is a clarion call for a strategic overhaul of America's cyber defense capabilities. The assertion that the current system of force generation is fundamentally flawed and inadequate in preparing a cyber force ready to fulfill its mission is a significant critique of the status quo. The diversity in the training, readiness, and prioritization of cyber operations across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps has resulted in inconsistencies and deficiencies that cannot be ignored. This call for an independent Cyber Force underscores the critical need for a unified and focused approach to nurturing and deploying cyber talent, free from the constraints and competing priorities inherent in the existing service structures. The report highlights that the inefficiencies in the current system not only hinder recruitment and retention but also compromise the readiness and effectiveness of the cyber mission force. The proposed Cyber Force, potentially housed within the Department of the Army, presents an opportunity to centralize efforts, streamline training, and ensure a consistent, high-level focus on cyber operations. As cyber threats continue to evolve in sophistication and scale, the imperative for an agile, well-prepared cyber force becomes increasingly urgent. This proposed restructuring aims to address the current shortcomings and position the United States to more effectively counter and mitigate cyber threats. The establishment of an independent cyber service could be a pivotal step in ensuring that America's cyber defense strategy is equipped to meet the challenges of the digital age. #cyberforce #cyberthreats #cyberdefensestrategy #cyberservice #digitalage #threatmitigation #cyberoperations #army #military
