This week, the Startup-Verband published its report with the catchy but far from exaggerated title: 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘱𝘴 & 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘈𝘐. 𝘈 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘌𝘳𝘢 𝘉𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘴. Almost half of all start-ups surveyed (47%) believe that Generative AI challenges many existing business models. In yesterday's panel discussion, 𝘓𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, organized by Lena Scholtke and Elizabeth Ascherl from ICN Business School, we were interested how this challenge can be for the better and asked: How can we facilitate the #sustainabletransformation of #businessmodels with #AI? Together with Liz, I had the joy of moderating the panel with the amazing guests of Dominik, co-founder #algonout as well as Toby, founding team member and business development lead Briink in Berlin, and Christine Goulay, founder of Sustainabelle Advisory Services and Sarah (ICN) in Paris. I learned the following (list not exclusive 😉): ❇ Before the breakthrough use case comes the hard work: this means defining goals, collecting data, creating appropriate infrastructure, and then using AI to gain efficiencies for more sustainability.   ❇ Using (gen) AI to create structured CSR reports is not only interesting for large companies with extensive internal documentation but also for SMEs, e.g., building on their supply chain documentation and to deal with current developments in regulation #CSDDD ❇ Once again, AI as technological development requires #HEI to nourish lifelong learning as competence. This is not only against the background of updating technical knowledge but also making sensible decisions about which resource-intensive model I really need to use for my use case—if necessary, I can also adjust a model for my needs, or I don't need AI at all to save resources. Last weeks webinar with Mutual Ventures on AI in the Public sector got me thinking..... What are the best uses of AI in social care you've seen? (that have gone beyond a pilot! 📈) Facing ever-growing demands, the public sector's challenge of limited resources is only getting worse. We're seeing councils go bankrupt, and services stripped back all across the UK. It's easy for us tech folk to think we can fix things, and there's a lot of focus on AI at the minute. AI is definitely not 'the' answer.... 🏠 AI can't provide you with a house. 🛌 AI can't hoist you out your bed. 👔 AI can't help you get dressed. ☕️ AI can't join you for a cuppa and listen to your worries and dreams. To increase how we can provide these things, we need a new proactive and forward thinking government, delivering more funding, and ultimately more people. But in the meantime, we are seeing that AI can help in some areas: 💏 AI can identify people early that need help when services are more cost effective to deliver. 💬 AI can provide a personalised front door into council services. 👨🔧 AI can provide personalised support, regular checkins and 24/7 advice. 👩⚕️AI can help us recruit and train our workforce. ... and until that extra funding comes AI can help deliver some savings that are redeployed into direct services and real people, and frontline services. Attended Rise of AI and leaving with mixed feelings. Big Pro: Innovative approaches from startups and other (tech) companies. Even better panel on Europe’s AI dilemma. Great discussions with customers using copilot and driving AI adoption within their own companies. Brilliant speech by Irina. Some quotes from attendees/panelists: - “We (Germany) have the talent (to create AI use cases)” - “A lot of things are happening with great impact, eg in the healthcare sector” - “We are laser focused on our (AI) strategy” Con: high level scripted speeches from policy makers with only covering buzz words - and one even answered that they are not using AI…hmmm…. One exception: Bavarians State Minister Dr. Fabian Mehring, who is looking for more collaboration (across our “Länder”) and building a (Bavarian) AI Hub. What’s missing overall? From my POV: money and mindset. Money to build, test, repeat. Also funded by government. Without much bureaucracy. And a mindset to “get things done”. Using AI is necessary for solving key societal challenges, staying competitive, and in general preserving and developing a democratic society with a high quality of life. The objective of An AI Strategy for Sweden is therefore to develop Sweden’s capabilities to strongly benefit from the potential of AI. An AI Strategy for Sweden has been written to guide politicians, business leaders, decision-makers, civil servants, or changemakers with ambition and responsibility to lead and develop Sweden, the Swedish ecosystem, or individual organizations and companies towards a positive future through one of the most transformative times in history. This first version of An AI Strategy for Sweden is intended to catalyze actions by leaders in national and regional governments, government agencies, corporations, and public organizations. It can not be emphasized enough that Sweden’s success in adopting AI requires broad and collective actions from a wide range of companies and organizations. It is not down to the government alone, although the government plays an important role as a key enabler. This Strategy has been developed by AI Sweden, the national center for applied AI with the mission to Accelerate the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness, and everyone living in Sweden, with feedback and input from selected experts in Sweden, Canada, USA and Singapore. 🚀 Shaping the Future: Collaborating with a Group within the Federal Ministry of Health to Develop an AI Strategy 🤖 Last week, I had the privilege of working with a group within the Ministry of Health in Germany to discuss an AI strategy. It was an absolute honor to collaborate with the federal government on such an important topic. 🤝 We discussed AI and its capabilities, the challenges it brings, the opportunities it presents, as well as the new EU AI Act. We also explored possible next steps and working groups to identify how the government can use AI or respond to a world that is rapidly evolving with this technology. It is clear that there is visible progress being made on AI. 📈 AI has the potential to be a game changer, and how we choose to use it is up to us. We are witnessing astonishing new AI models coming to the market almost daily, many of which have personally blown my mind. 🤯 The world is changing, and we must be prepared for it. 🌍 It is encouraging to see that there are many people within our government who are interested in AI and want to explore how it can help solve some of the toughest problems we face and generate wealth for the people and our economy. 💪 Of course, as we know, change and digitalization are slow-moving topics, particularly because so many parties are involved in the process—not only within the government but also industry associations, NGOs, and lobbyists, to name a few. This often makes it difficult to move at speed. 🐢 Yet, it is promising to see that there is significant interest in AI and the solutions it provides, as well as its challenges. 🌟 We need to continue empowering these stakeholders within the government by bringing together people, institutions, companies, and governments to discuss important topics and establish working groups that drive and implement innovative AI solutions. Dear Diary from the Future (aka 2025), Remember when I went to that Grow with AI Summit back in 2024? Well, future me here with an update. You know how they always said, "build a business that can run without you"? Be careful what you wish for, folks. It's been a year since I implemented all those AI tools. My business is running smoother than a freshly buttered slip 'n slide. It's making decisions, handling customers, and even updating its own software. It's like I cloned myself, but the clone is smarter, faster, and doesn't need coffee to function. There's just one tiny, itty-bitty issue... I think I've made myself obsolete.🤷♀️ Yesterday, the AI patted me on the head and said, "Good human. Why don't you go take a nap?" I'm starting to feel like the family dog. At least the dog gets belly rubs. But hey, isn't this what we all dreamed of? A business that runs itself while we... um... stand around awkwardly, wondering what to do with our hands? I've started a support group: "Humans Replaced by Their Own AI" - HRBTA. We meet Tuesdays, right after our AIs let us out for a walk. Last week, we learned how to look busy by staring intently at blank screens. Progress!
