Great article! Walkability is a sometimes overlooked but key component to creating a greener, more sustainable society. Designing communities for pedestrians also has a cascade of positive effects on the local economy, quality of life, safety, and other factors that make a place livable. It’s great to see many major U.S. cities taking steps to design their streets less for cars and more for the people that keep these communities alive.

We are inspired by the walkability of European cities. Walkability is essential to sustainable urban development. There is a proven link between a city’s walkability and the physical, emotional & mental health of its residents. This is why we believe that walkability is a civic right, and why it is crucial to consider and center the diverse mobility needs and habits of residents when developing cities and towns for the next phase of American urban life.

#PlacemakingUS The approach outlined in the provided text is out of tune with nature and the natural needs of building living cities in several ways: The emphasis on top-down planning neglects the organic growth and evolution of cities, which often arise from the interaction between human activities and natural environments. Prioritizing financing infrastructure over holistic urban planning overlooks the importance of considering environmental and social factors in city development. Relying heavily on market forces to shape the built environment can result in cities that prioritize profit over people and fail to address pressing social and environmental issues. Promoting the expansion of structured suburbs as a solution to urban challenges overlooks the negative consequences of sprawl, such as increased car dependency, habitat destruction, and social isolation. While leveraging existing cities the approach described fails to prioritize the integration of cities with nature and overlooks the importance of sustainability, resilience, and community well-being in urban planning. In contrast sustainable city planning should embrace the interconnectedness of land and water resources, guiding development in harmony with nature's rhythms.
