Remembering the lives lost and the heroes born on this unforgettable day, 23 years ago. I was a young single Mom, attending SFU, on campus for the first time, having left my little girl at home, driving four hours to begin the second last semester of my undergraduate criminology degree. The hallways were jammed with students watching clips of the second plane flying into the second tower. All I wanted to do was race home and squeeze my baby girl. My scholastic and professional journey has taken me from the hallways of SFU, to the assisting law enforcement on the front line, to today, where I assist in fostering resilience and building capacity in those that continue to serve and protect. One of my International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc. mentors assisted in the provision of mental health first aid to the firefighters in New York City. He told me he was stationed as a peer, near ground zero, offering water and check-ins to the exhausted firefighters as they rested for brief periods before returning for duty. Not surprisingly, the seemingly insignificant, often silent extension of support was proven to make a MASSIVE difference in mental health outcomes for those on the front line, even years later. Never underestimate the power of peer support. Whether a massive, tragic terrorist attack, or a motor vehicle fatality, having the timely support of a professionally trained peer can make the world of difference. 23 years later, I STILL remember every last detail of that morning, waking up and watching the second plane hit. My heart aches for the families of the victims, and the families of the first responders who gave their lives trying to save others. May we never forget. #911 #firstrespondermentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #peersupport #groupcrisisintervention #crisisresponse #crisis

What can we do to support survivors and promote resilience? Resilience theory encourages those working/in relationships with survivors to focus on strengths and what thr survivor has done to survive rather than on negative symptoms. As important as it is for service providers to learn about trauma and resilience, it is even more important that this information gets into the hands of survivors themselves. We need survivor wisdom and perspectives to shape a trauma-informed world. #sercle #community #resilience #survivorwisdom #sgbv #trauma #traumasupport #youarenotalone #believesurvivors #supportsurvivors

Suicide and firefighters. It’s the epidemic that hits you in the face every time. It’s the subject that no matter how much we try to- we can’t seem to make a dent in it. Why? I don’t have the answer. But I do think that we consistently ignore a part of the answer despite knowing something key about firefighters. We don’t talk about our weaknesses. Or when we’re scared. Or low. We work through them on our own. Quietly. Until we either succeed…or we succumb. Knowing this about us - why are we not teaching our firefighters how to handle suicidal thoughts on their own? We can point people towards resources all day long, but shouldn’t we have a safety net for those we know won’t use them? Have a plan for those that might be making a plan. Teach our firefighters methodical ways to save themselves WHILE ensuring that when and if they choose to reach out - you’ll be right there. #suicideprevention #fireservice #firefighters #firesafety

First Responders Resilience Network: Empowering First Responders- Building Resilience and Support for You and Your Team
We all see it—we can do more and we need to do more. The current state of training and support for our first responders and community leaders shows us that there is a significant gap that needs to be addressed. Implementing enhanced training, advanced techniques, and additional resources within our academies, departments, and leadership can profoundly improve outcomes and well-being. This is why I chose to take action and make a difference. By focusing on comprehensive mental health programs and robust support systems, we can drive meaningful change and better support those who serve our communities. Together, we can change the statistics.

In construction, we build more than just structures—we build communities that care. Let’s create a culture where everyone feels supported, on and off the job site. You’re never alone, and it’s always okay to ask for help. Keep an eye out for these signs in your crew: ✔️ Verbal - Talking about being a burden or not wanting to live. ✔️ Emotional - Loss of joy or frequent outbursts. ✔️ Behavioral - Mood changes or changes in sleep and eating habits. Let’s look out for each other, always.
