🏛️Do the classics have a place in modern education? I am a firm believer that they do. However not how you might think. 🏺Recent news from a great school in my hometown of London, Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre (The NCS), that they are offering classes in the classics to enhance the classroom. 🧐This is a great opportunity to see the foundations of our modern world. I would argue that on those foundations there is also far more to explore. 📚Renaissance humanism was built on classical thought and on humanism was built the Age of Enlightenment and eventually our own modernity. 🎭Engaging with thinkers, writers, arts, across the ages creates a foundation for modern learning in the Information Age. 🏆Engagement with it all is vital to see the world clearly and I know that this foundation being built by Newham will pay off massively for the students undertaking their journey into classical thought. #educationalleadership #classics #teaching

Thank you to Travis J. Bristol, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Education and Board Chair at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, for presenting to the RPPL network in April’s Brown Bag Lunch! This session, “Becoming a Critical Educative Mentor: A Professional Learning Community for Veteran Teachers in an Urban School District”, explored three related research strands in the context of culturally responsive teacher professional learning:  1️⃣ The role of educational policies in shaping teacher workplace experiences and retention; 2️⃣ District and school-based professional learning communities; 3️⃣ The role of race and gender in educational settings.

Tomorrow we all be celebrating Teachers’ Day, there will be a usual charade going gaga over a teacher’s role and importance in society and nation at the same time the government is in a Machiavellian move replacing Teachers with online tutoring.   Paeans would be sung about Education and Educational Institutions being nation-builders, at the same time efforts are being made to disempower and devalue institutions.   Institutions are no longer educating students; they are controlling students. Teachers are judgmental, and students butter them. No accountability nothing…. And they demand respect not earning.   W.B. Yeats poignantly captured this sentiment in his words: “The ceremony of innocence is drowned; the best lack conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity”. In today’s educational landscape, those truly committed to teaching and guiding the next generation often find themselves overshadowed by forces driven by less noble intentions. This Teachers' Day, let’s go beyond the surface-level accolades and critically reflect on the state of our education system. It’s a call to action for educators, institutions, and policymakers to reclaim the true essence of education—to empower, enlighten, and inspire with integrity and conviction.
