A cornerstone of NSNO is advocacy, as well as providing you with resources and information that can be helpful in your day-to-day life in and outside of classrooms. There were a number of bills introduced this past legislative session that may affect the well-being, autonomy, and rights of students and educators. At the core of all of our work is maintaining an environment that supports positive outcomes for children and educators. We want students to meet their academic goals and feel a sense of belonging. We are grateful for the rich diversity and experience represented in our classrooms, and we want to ensure that every child and educator feels fully supported by their school. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be informing you of the bills that were passed or proposed that could affect what happens in classrooms, relationships teachers have with their students, teachers' personal finances, and more. We strongly encourage you to stay engaged, stay informed, and take action to advocate for the needs of our collective community.

Asking questions during an IEP meeting is crucial because it: 1. Facilitates advocacy for the child's educational needs. 2. Enhances parents' understanding of their child's progress and challenges. 3. Promotes collaboration between parents and school staff. 4. Helps monitor the child's academic and social development. 5. Empowers parents to actively engage in the educational planning process.

Public schools are more segregated today than they were a half century ago. A Supreme Court ruling, handed down 50 years ago this week, significantly limited federal efforts to desegregate schools. But we aren't doomed to accept segregated schools as our destiny. There is still a lot that states can and should do to reverse educational inequities and create a system where all students have the support they need to reach their full potential. Our partners Brown's Promise have a roadmap for states to follow 👇 https://lnkd.in/gUNHyaN5

📢 Attention Parents and Concerned Community Members! 🚫 I want to bring to your attention an unfortunate incident that I recently experienced at "Ali Public School" while attempting to enroll my child for prep class. My wife went through the admission process, and we were informed that our child is good but needs a little improvement. Despite this feedback, we were willing to work on the suggested areas for improvement and decided to proceed with the admission process. However, our experience took an unexpected turn when we were asked to attend a meeting with the vice principal before finalizing the admission. Taking time off from work, I arrived at the school the next day, only to be kept waiting for an extended period in the waiting room. After passing 20 minutes, inquiring multiple times, the staff assured me that the vice principal was ready to meet. To my dismay, upon entering the room, it was empty – no vice principal in sight. After waiting patiently for another 20 minutes, I sought clarification from the staff. Shockingly, I was told that it was my fault for sending my child to another tuition/academy centre not run by any school teacher. This was an unexpected and baseless accusation, as we were never informed of any such requirement during the admission process. I strongly urge the management of "Ali Public High School For Girls Raiwind" to reconsider the unfair treatment meted out to parents and to eliminate such damaging politics from the school environment. It is disheartening to see such unprofessional conduct, especially when it affects the future of our children. I implore the school to prioritize transparency, fairness, and accountability in their admission processes. As responsible parents, we should not have to navigate through unnecessary hurdles in providing our children with quality education. Let us unite against such practices and stand up for the rights of our children. I encourage fellow parents and concerned community members to voice their opinions and reconsider affiliating with "Ali Public School" Raiwind campus until these issues are addressed. #stopschoolpolitics #faireducationforall #alipublicschool #concerns #politics #education #lahore #alipublicschool #RaiwindCampus #educationforallchildren #childrights #EqualOpportunityInEducation #transparencyinadmissions #parentalrights

This article highlights well the challenges faced by parents of children with learning differences in reading, seeking a free and appropriate public education. I commend these parents for fighting for what is right. In our family, we chose to provide the services my child needed outside of school, but we share our story - because I want ALL CHILDREN to have appropriate instruction. Public schools can and should provide it, and more and more States are passing laws paying lip service to ensuring children get appropriate instruction in literacy. For that to become reality, public schools will have to change how they teach all children to read. Literacy is the pathway to equality of opportunity. It should not be that only dyslexic children with resourced parents receive appropriate instruction that will enable them to learn to read in a timely manner. I truly believe, if we had left it to the public schools, my child may not have learned to read, or at least, not in a timely manner. The data demonstrates that providing appropriate instruction by age 7 enables these children to thrive, while waiting until age 10 may mean these children struggle for a lifetime. My child will always be dyslexic, but he is not hobbled by illiteracy. He thrives today because he was identified and accommodated (much provided outside of school) at age 6. We should all fight for change, because you never know when it will be your child. Or, if it already is your child, struggling with a hidden learning difference that you - or their educators - think is laziness or low intellectual ability.

An important read.
A recent publication by Dr Glenys Mann, Doctoral Candidate Lynsey Kennedy-Wood, and Professor Linda Gilmore highlights the important roles parents play in facilitating safe, quality, inclusive education for students with intellectual disability. The article explores the position of the Disability Royal Commission on Violence, Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of People with Disability regarding parent roles in education and pays particular attention to how parents influence their children's school experiences through their choice of school, involvement in educational decision making, and advocacy when concerns arise. Educational Equity Champion, Leadership Developer, Author, Keynote Speaker, Curriculum Reviewer, Critical Literacy Theorist,
This was the goal. Create a disenfranchising environment where large numbers of educators leave to kick the door wide open for the outright dismantling of public education. Please know that this is a test case to see how far a governor could go in advancing the education agenda. There would NEVER be empty library shelves in neighborhoods NOT like HISD. But with many education "initiatives," certain children are used to experiment on to see what works. Now that this has worked here, be on the lookout for similar actions in other districts. Our children deserve fully stocked libraries, not in-school detention centers. They deserve agency-developing learning environments where they will be equipped to fully engage in the world. This is abhorrent! https://lnkd.in/gPCnYyJS Staff call for removal of state-appointed superintendent amid 600 teachers resigning and implementation of rigid curriculum
