🍎 Monday, May 6th through Friday, May 10th is Teacher Appreciation Week! My family is filled with educators, so I am very aware of the challenges and realities of being a teacher. I would not be who I am without the educators who shaped my life. We should be showing gratitude to our teachers every day, but it is great to have a week reminding us to celebrate these influential people in our lives or in the lives of our children. 🍏 Here are some ideas of what you can do to celebrate teachers this week: 📚 Write a thank-you note. A note is an inexpensive and wonderful way to show gratitude for a teacher's hard work and efforts. A note from both the student and parent will be meaningful. 📚 Buy something off of your teacher's Amazon Classroom Wish List or share their list on social media! Teachers typically have to spend their own money on their classroom decor and supplies. If you know your teacher needs a restock on classroom essentials, this is a great way to take something off their plate! 📚 Gift cards, gift cards, gift cards! Most people would prefer to pick out something for themselves, so a gift card to Amazon, a local store, coffee shop or restaurant is an easy gift any teacher will appreciate. 📚 Social media shoutouts! Recognize an impactful teacher on social media and spread the word about Teacher Appreciation Week. If you are an educator or administrator, shout out someone from your staff. Teachers have an impact that reaches far beyond their students, shaping families and communities. Take this week to highlight and honor the individuals who dedicate their lives to educating us and our children. #NationalTeacherAppreciationWeek #TeacherAppreciationWeek

I was chatting with some teachers the other day and they expressed they are physically and emotionally drained. The challenges of the job - lack of engagement from parents and students, student absenteeism- has taken a toll on many educators. We often discuss the challenges that students face which impact their performance; yet we don’t spend time supporting the teachers who may also have challenges they are facing as well. Yes teachers are “professionals” but they require support. Doubling down and trying to pretend that challenges don’t exist has created some of the mass exodus we see in some school systems. I do not believe in gaslighting; yet I do not believe in being a victim. We chose a profession where we may not see the fruits of our labor until years later and sometimes not even then. Teachers, your resilience in the face of challenges inspires us all! 💪 Remember, your efforts are seen, valued, and profoundly impactful. As educators, we may lament among our colleagues, however here are some facts: The current state of public education, particularly regarding teacher attrition and retention, reveals some critical challenges. ➡️Recent data highlights significant turnover among teachers and principals, exacerbated by the ongoing impacts of the pandemic and other systemic issues. ➡️Teacher attrition rates have been notably high. For instance, at the end of the 2021–2022 school year, teacher turnover reached 10% nationally, which was an increase of 4 percentage points above pre-pandemic levels. ➡️Principal turnover was even higher, reaching 16% nationally going into the 2022–2023 school year. These trends are even more pronounced in urban and high-poverty districts, as well as districts serving predominantly students of color, where turnover rates for teachers were around 12 to 14 percent, and for principals around 21 to 23 percent. You can read more here https://bit.ly/4b3Ybuk To quote the late great Joe Madison, "The Black Eagle": "What are you going to do about it?" 🤔 During this Teacher Appreciation Week, what are YOU going to do to retain teachers? What is one challenge in your school community that you can contribute to solving? Do you attend school board meetings? Most meetings are live streamed so even if you can't attend in person, you can view them later. Do you do that? Do you know who the name of your school board representative? Yes it is important to appreciate educators this week; however it is more important to advocate for the profession. If not, we will all suffer...as a community...as a nation. For ongoing support and resources, sign up to receive the Dr. D Consulting monthly newsletter, EmpowerED Insights. https://lnkd.in/e4Spkf-8 Sign up today and enter to win an Amazon gift card! All who sign up by the deadline, Friday May 10 at 11:59PM, will be entered in the drawing. Drawing will be held on Saturday May 11, 2024.
